passing by quickly and the
elementary and secondary
school students will soon be
out of school for the summer.
The college and university.
students have been out for a
few weeks now and are
trying to get employment for
the summer. The weather
has not been too consistent
as the rain manages to
appear for a few days each
week. The farmers got back
on the land and,, sure did
make the dust fly. A number
of ladies were planting gar-
den seeds and replanting
their strawberry plants mak-
ing ready for more produce.
The smell of freshly cut
lawns this weekend was
fantastic. It made one forget
about the cold bleak days of
winter and look forward to
the planting, growing and
harvest to come. The base-
ball and soccer players are all
out in full force, practising
up for the beginning of
another season. The sun
bathers got a few days to
change their pale skin to
flaming red. The little folks
donned their shorts only to
find they had cute little legs
and, by the end of the dity.
scraped knees.
This comine weekend is a
summer.
City dwellers enjoy escap-
ing from the hustle and
bustle of the business world,
to the quiet, more open,
spaces of cottage country.
The smell of the barbecue or
the toasting of marshmallows
over a campfire on the beach
sure does beat the turmoil of
living in a high rise apart-
ment in downtown Toronto.
On holiday weekends the
traffic becomes congested
and often times result in
numerous accidents. We
hope everyone has a good
holiday and that your journey
wherever you go may be a
safe and enjoyable one filled
with lots of fun in the sun.

evening May 24, in the St.
Patrick's Parish Hall at 8:00
p.m. at their regular meet-
ing. The guest speaker is
Elaine Gottschall on the
subject of "Nutrition".
Everyone wants to live a
healthy life and in order to
maintain this, one needs to
know the proper foods to eat
and how to prepare them
without their loosing their
nutritional value. This meet-
ing is open to anyone, so
please feel free to come and

Principals and teachers in the Huron -Perth
Separate School system will be shuffled
around at the end of this school year.
The transfers were approved at the
Huron -Perth Separate School Board's May 9
meeting as was the closing of two classrooms,
one at Immaculate Conception in Stratford
and the other at St. Boniface in Zurich.
The principals to be transferred are Larry
Cook of St. Patrick's in Dublin who will be
moving to St. Michael's in Stratford;
Immaculate Conception principal Michael
Dewan who is going to St. Patrick's in
Kinkora and the Kinkora principal, Ennis
Murphy. is being transferred to St. Patrick's
in Dublin.
The principal transfers are taking place as
St. Michael's principal Sister Audrey
Dumouchelle is moving to Moosonee.
The separate school board had also given
consideration to twinning two Stratford
schools. St. Ambrose and St. Joseph's.
Instead, a classroom may be closed at St. -
Joseph's. If twinning had taken place, one
principal would have served the two schools.

Stratford wants to
rent Lodge land
Perth County Council has
been requested to consider
leasing its share of a portion
of land on Spruce Lodge
property to the City of
Stratford.
Spruce Lodge, adminstra-
tor Jim Henry spoke on
behalf of the Spruce Lodge
Board of management at
county council's May 12
meeting
The reason for the request,
as outlined by Mr. Henry, is
to allow the city to apply for
funding under the Commun-
ity Recreation Centres Act
(CRCA) for an estimated
$818.000 activity centre at
the lodge.
The proposed activity
centre represents phase two
of a three-phase plan for the
home for the aged. Phase
one is the addition of 50
apartment units while phase
three includes improvements
to the existing structure.
The city and the county are
currently equal partners in
the ownership of Spruce
Lodge, with the separated
town of St. Marys having a
7.25 per cent share in the
home.
Ellice Township Reeve
Fred Knechtel asked why the
country couldn't become sole
owner of the land to apply for
the funding.

The leasing of the land to
the city is necessary to apply
for 25 per cent funding from
CRCA explained Mr. Henry.
He added that under its
funding program, CRCA
doesn't recognize the county
as a municipality.
The fact that the city may
have control of the land
doesn't mean county or St.
Marys' residents in Spruce
Lodge won't be able to use
the activity centre, Mr. Hen-
ry emphasized.
The whole activity centre
phase depends on whether or
not the City of Sttatford
agrees to the plan. At its
most recent meeting. Strat-
ford City County referred the
matter to its finance sub-
committee.
The Spruce Lodge admin-
istrator said the proposed
activity centre has been
estimated at about $11,000
square feet in size. The land
to be leased to the city will be
approximately 11,000 square
feet of the 12 acres Spruce
Lodge is located on.
Additional sources of fund-
ing for the activity centre are
being explored noted Mr.
Henry.
The plans for the activity
centre include meeting the
games rooms with a therap-
eutic pool high on the priority
list.
