anada is more than geography, exchange students
BY JOAN CRONIN
To learn about one's country - Canada •
out ofa textbook is never as gratifying as
learning through an exchange program. No
doubt many ..of you are familiar with the
French student program where students of
two different languages meet buVhere is an
exchange that is quite different.
Two students from different provinces
exchange their, location, culture and their
total way of life for one to four months as a
new and on -the -spot learning experience.
Jayne Delaney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Joe Delaney of R.R. 111, Dublin, a grade 13
• student at Seaforth District High School, is
hosting Tracey Opheim of Kitimat, British "
Columbia, a city of approximately 15,000?:,,
people. Tracey is a grade 11 student in a
school with 1300 students.
Tracey finds attending Seaforth District
Shop Stratford.
11;r C:tv("entre Jp
High School, which has a student enrolment
of approximately 400, quite a change but
she notes that the students are far more
friendly. They also have the semester
system in B.C. • which was begun in
Seaforth this past year, but only in grade 11,
12 and there the grades 8, 9 and 10 have the
full year program.
Also in B.C. they do not have grade 13.
Tracey attends grade 11 classes here during
the school hours and for, the remainder of
the time she enjoys life with the Delaney
family on their farm.
Tracey found the geographical structure
so different here compared to her area in
B.C. The mountains and forests are so
common to Tracey that the flat land here
where one could see for miles seems quite
plain. Living on a farm is not the same as in
the city -- one could not see new twin calves
or experience" the fragrance of the farming
community air.
The young people in B.C. and Ontario
dress the same and enjoy similar activities.
Coming from a mountainous province,
Tracey is an avid down -hill skier, she also
enjoys curling and tennis. Tracey noted that
in Ontario we consume more beef than fish
as this is a beef and dairy area and in B.C.
fresh fish is more readily available.
The Delaney family have taken Tracey to
Toronto to the Parliament Buildings, the
C.N. Tower and Eaton's Centre and also to
Niagara Falls and for a ride on the Maid of
the Mist. Each weekend is filled with sights
to see and of course the occasional shopping
spree.
Jayne Delaney was the first student at
Seaforth District High to participate in this
exchange program, sponsored by Educa-
tion Canada.
In September Jayne took her first
airplane ride to Honeymoon Bay, V'aneob<
ver Island where she. spent four weeks with
Lisa Rowland and her family.;° Jayne
participated in grade 12 classes as they did
not have grade 13 there and observed that
their level of education was not as -advanced
as here. The people were very friendly and
the scenery was beautiful. Driving proved
to be rather strenuous in the mountain area
compared to our flat, less winding roads.
Jayne took along projects and research work
in order to be able to keep her course of
study up with her classmates here.
Both girls commented on the enjoyable
four and a half hour flight, which if one
added the three hour time change. would
have become seven and a half hours. The
girls are learning by living together and
aegrn
sharing common "Interests and attitudes.
At the moment, Denise Dupuis of
Seaforth is in the North West Territories as
an exchange student and upon her return
she will host someone from somewhere else
in Canada. So often people travel to
different far off corners of the earth seeking
greater knowledge of the world we live in,'
without ever understanding those we live
with. Canada is a beautiful country, 0110
with people and places far more interesting
than words can describe. -
Our young students are now being able to
experience the pages of their geography
text come alive and as a result will carry
with them a living knowledge of their
country forever, rather than a slight
recollection of a few maps and pictures
discarded in time.
