r New sports Monday line ADVANCE—The Seaforth Midgets advanced to the semi-finals of the OMHA after they defeated Kingsville In two straight games. The team defeated Kingsville 7-3 in Seaforth on Saturday and 10-8 In an exciting overtime period. It is not yet known which team the Midgets will face next. (Photo by Hook) f Itt&ITHE HURON EXPOSITOR, MARCH 9, 1983 — A13 Midgets to advance to .semi-finals of OMHA On Saturd-ay, Seaforth Midgets hosted Kingsville for the first game of a best -of - three series—First important goal was scored by David Campbell ass steel by Dan Sloan and Jerry+ Wright. Kingsville retaliated with the next two goals followed by a goal from Dan Van Loon assisted by Greg Murray. The first period ended with 2 goals apiece. Seaforth took a solid lead in the second period. First goal was scored by Kevin Melady assisted by Greg Murray. Second goal was scored by Dave McElwain assisted by Kevin Melady and Greg Mur- ray. Dave scored another before the end of the second period assisted by Grcg again. In the third period Kings - ville scored one mote. Kevin Mclady scored two more earning him a hat trick assisted on both by Greg Murray and one assist for .pave McLlwain. Kevin Melady played an excellent game: by digging in the corners and generally really hustling. Derek Cooper played a super game in the nets. He covered the puck well and challenged the shooter when' he broke in to (hake a play. All in all a super team effort. Final score was 7 for Seaforth, 3 for Kingsville. Seaforth travelled to Kingsville for a later 7:00 game on Sunday. The first period began well with a goal opener by David Campbell again assisted by Dan Sloan. Kingsville returned to shoot in three goals. Dave McLlwain finished the first period with a goal assisted by Greg Murray. Dave began the second period with a goal assisted by Kevin Melady and Greg. Kingsville came back with two more. Jerry Wright fin- ished off the period with a goal from David Campbell and Scott Driscoll. As the period ended Kings- ville was leading 5 to 4. At this point the team didn't seem to be putting in the same effort that they had done the night before. The third period began with two quick goals by Kingsville. Two minutes later Dave retaliated with 'a goal assisted by Kevin William- son. Kingsville then scored again. At this point we were down 8 to 5. All of a sudden our team seemed to take off after Kevin Melady scored assist- ed by Dave and Greg. Then Dave scored at the 11:49 mark assisted by Kevin and Greg. With 11/2 minutes deft in the game Dave Campbell came through with the tying goal assisted by Dave -and Greg. What an ending to the third period. The Seaforth fans were ecstatic. We needed the win in order not to travel back to Kingsville next weekend. In the ten minute overtime Greg Murray took over and scored at the 7:36 mark unassisted and then at the 9:32 mark assisted by David Campbell. All in all Dave McLlwain scored a hat trick plus one, Dave Campbell ' scored the opener and tie goal and Greg scored the two winning goals in overtime. The defence have done their jobs as well as the forwards. Final score was 10 to 8. Parents and coaches were certainly proud of them. The Midgets will now advance to the semi-finals of the OMHA. Hensall, Huron Park. Elma Logan and Zurich. The competition was really good but the boys did not manage a win all year. Seaforth tied a few and lost the rest. they just couldn't get it together... until...the series against Lis- towel, Listowel .is also a second Pee Wee team and both squads are evenly matched. The first game was played Feb. 13 in Seaforth with a score of 6-4 in Listowel's favor. The game was score- less until the middle of the second period when Pat Nigh, scored assisted by Mark Reid and Wayne Regele. Listowel came back quickly with three in a row. Seaforth put on a surge of speed and Sean Cook assisted by Jason Wheatley and again Cookie unassisted this time tapped in two for Seaforth. Listowel put two more in the middle of the third and with three minutes left Seaforth scored, Wheat- ley from Aaron Broome. Winners were ladies Vietta Hoggart, Dora Shobbrook, Margaret Good. Vi Burns, Tom Allen, Les Reid. Lorne Hunking and Reg Lawson. Playoff winner, were Dora Shobhrook and Reg Lawson, Margaret Good and Tom Alien. Next game will be March 23. . The World Day of, Brayer and U.C.W. gen meeting was held March 4. President Gail Lear welcomed all. There was some discussion on continuing to sponsor a foster child. Margaret Good is to write for information on Lani Sin Bing's education standard. The cancer daffodil tea is March 20. Diane Stevenson volunteered to help at the tea in Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Army but Listowel caught Seaforth out of position and slapped number six into the empty net. The second game in Listo- wel ended 4-2, again for the Listowel team on Feb. 19. The Reds opened the scoring in the first minute of play and knocked t the wind out of Seaforth momentarily but Scott Hoegy scored on a nifty pass from Mark Reid to tie it up. By th n end of the second period, the score was 4-1 for Listowel but Seaforth didn't give up as Sean Cook scored unassisted on the only goal of the third period. The third game back in Seaforth on Feb. 27 was a thriller with a two all tie at the end of a ten minute overtime. Both teams played a good, scoreless first period of hockey. It wasn't until the middle of the second period that Sean Cook fooled the goalie. assisted by Jim Roth. Listowel retaliated by bang- ing two past Trevor Fortune. The air was tense as it looked like Seaforth had blown the game but they pulled up their hockey socks and went for the tieing goal. Jason Wheatley saved the day with three minutes left in the third period by netting an unassisted goal. A real nail biting overtime period ended scoreless. Way to go boys, supporters said (and was the dressing room noisy?) The fourth game in Lis- towel on March 1 proved to be Seaforth's first win of the year and a shut out for goalie Trevor Fortune. The score was 4-0. In the middle of the first period Jason Wheatley roar- ed -up the ice to score unassisted. ttistowel didn't know, what lit them when Sean Cook mapped another ,one in. assisted by Wheatley. Cookie fired again at the end of the second period, assisted by Aaron Broome. At the beginning of the third period, Mark Reid nailed the coffin shut on a dandy pass from Steve O'Conner. The fifth game back in Seaforth on home ice, March '6 was well attended not only by Pee Wee B parents but by members and their families of the Pee Wee A's. Pee Wee B supporters say thanks for the support and encouragement of those involved. The team did not disappoint their fans as they pulled off a 4-1 victory. Listowel's Red Ma- chine couldn't get enough goals past Trevor Fortune to narrow the pap and Seaforth ran away with the win. This was the first win for this team in their new arena and it felt "terrific" players said. Pat Nigh opened the scor- ing. assisted by Scott Hoegy at the end of the first period. Again Nigh, on a pass from Hoegy, dug into the corner and slipped it in the net on a sneaky angle. Mark Reid from Paul Mur- ray flipped the puck past the Listowel goalie to widen the score. Listowel came back to score their only goal of the game. At the end of the third period, Listowel pulled their goalie and Reid hustled in on a break away, firing into the open net. Pat Nigh and Paul Murray assisted. A great team effort was shown throughout the game as they played shorthanded many times. Good defense, goal- tending and forward passing were a major factor in the win. The team now boasts its first pair of "Wheatleyalls" the one piece Cooperall pro- tectors, which save the legs says. player Jason Wheatley. As Listowel and Scaforth both had two wins and one tie. the series was forced to a sixth game back in Listowel March 8.
