Perth trustee feels consultant valuable BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE The hiring of a consultant lirni for the Perth Board of Education's group life and major medical coverages was questionc(i by trustees. They asked their questions at the board's March I meeting. The konsulting firm being considered. Executive Compensation Consultants Limited ( ECC) of Toronto has in the past been used by the. hoard to negotiate its insur- ance. About two years ago the firm negotiated rates with Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada which ended in a $30.000 saving to the board. A recommendation from the board's administration called for the reappointment of this firm as Sun Lite's rates will be going up substan- tially. The recommendation also included a 52.1)00 cont• mission for the consulting firm andanhourly ,ur v fee of $15(1 for any work over the commis. sion. These figures arc loafer than a $1(1.000 coninl1551011 which according to the hoard's administration is not unusual, Stratford trustee Ron Rich- ards, an insurance salesman, questioned the fee being paid to the consulting firm and suggestcd, the board pay only a coniniil4Siyn for a fee, "but • not both '. "I'd like to see limit." said Mr. Richards noting it should not take the company more than 20 hours to put the facts together for the board. Ile also said the fees arc a little high and proposed that 'the board limit the fees to 53,000. His suggestion was eventually put into a motion and approved by the hoard. One trustee asked who the people behind the company are and director of education Paul Shcrratt said Fred Thompson of Toronto is the actuary (the insurance per- son) and has worked for the hoard •r I ' 1l last. Mr, Rich- ards said fernier superinten- dent of business and !IMMIX Leigh Anderson had recom- mended the -firm. (Mr. An Wth?© Staffa r Correspondent MARG HUI.LEY. (Jerson left the board at the end of 1481 to take a position with a Board of Education in British Columbia.) "1 think there is some kind of family tic." said Mr. Richards. - South Easthopc Township trustee Rodl%y Bell question- ed the need for consultants. "A consultant is very valu- able." said Mr. Shcrratt pointing out other consulting firms the hoard uses, such as Stan Bowman Associates for contract negotiations and le• gal firms. "1'd he at a loss to determine their value," add- - ed Mr. Sherratt noting these consultants have certain areas of expeylise. Stratford trustee Howard Shantz asked if the limit placed on The consulting firm's fee would place a •s 'ot on thei • work.
