Laboratory can perfo m 40 different tests
As can been seen from the number of
instruments in the Laboratory, a
• modern lab relies heavily on computer-
based technology. Most of the original
manual methods have now been
modified and adapted to be performed
on automated or semi -automated equip-
ment. It has been almost universally
accepted, that test procedures perform-
ed manually are neither accurate nor
precise enough to meet the needs of
fern physicians nor to meet the stan-
dards set out in proficiency testing
programs.
The laboratory of the Seaforth Com-
munity Hospital prior to September
1983, performed a limited range of
testing. The five procedures performed
were the minimum capable of suppor-
ting the local medical staff. The bulk of
the testing was performed by the Strat-
ford General Hospital with most results
available the next day. •
In September 1983, with the hiring of
experienced medical Laboratory
Technologists, the laboratory began am
expansion of the test menu in an effort
to provide a more efficient, cost-
effective service for the physicians.
The Laboratory has continued to ex-
pand the service until today there are
40 different tests performed by its four

and two part time), representing more
than 90 per cent of the total number of
