Janet Buchanan and• Bob Skeoch were present at council last week, to detail plans for the 1990 Provincial Broomball Championships, to be held in Seaforth and Clinton on the weekend of March 16 to 18, 1990. Seaforth will be the primary home of the games, hosting games on all three days of the weekend, all the final games on Sunday, plus the opening ceremonies on Friday evening. Mrs. Buchanan and Mr. Skeoch asked council to consider two types of financing for the .games, the first, a donation of $500 for expenses such as ice 'time and equip- ment, .and the second, placement of an advertisement in a program booklet to be distributed free of charge to each partici- pant and spectator. That program will in- clude schedules of games, information about the teams, and maps of the host towns, plus a list of facilities available there. Cost for a full page advertisement is $100, three-quarter page is $80, half page is $60 and quarter page is,$35•. .The surrounding townships, and the Town of Clinton, .are also being approach- ed for financial assistance. Townships are being asked to contribute $150 as opposed to the.$500 being requested of Seaforth and Clinton, The games are being run on a break even basis with any profit there is going towards junior broomball. Seaforth has the largest broomball league in Ontario and also boasts the largest junior broomball program. Organizers are expecting to put at least 3,000 people Through the doors between Fri- day and Sunday, and think $50,000 willbe spent in the three days of the tournament. A maximum of 32 and a minimum, of 28 teams will ,compete .in the tournament, in four divisions:The winners will play in the 1991 National Championships. Participants in the provincial tournament will be deter- mined at various regional tournaments across the province, and organizers say the chances of Seaforth having a team in the provincial competition are "very good". Detroit. ,Such a =move Snakes sense ,since Detroitis closer to this area than Buffalo, and since many area residents are keenly interested in :the 'Michigan and Detroit .sports scene. Harmer explained that when the hookup originally took place 10 years ago, the•Ba- falooption was the only one available, but now, -general -upkeep of their microwave feed would be expensive. Instead, new technology brought about via satellite feeds make it possible to receive the Detroit stations. "The satellite feed would be easier for us to maintain," he said. "We feel satellite, since we already pick up most of our sta- tions off of satellite, would be our best op- tion." Application has been made to the CRTC, and any objectors can -send their submis- sions to the Secretary General of the CRTC -in Ottawa before December 4th. At that time, .Harmer explained, the CRTC will review any Tetters they've received and send notification back to the local cable "'PV office. Ilnforttmately, there's no set time frame for their response," Harmer said. "I have no idea when it will be....it could a week, a month or three months." Harmer said the cable office bad receiv- ed just one call regarding the changeover last week, and the caller was in support of the move, We'll just have to wait and see," he said.
