SUNDAY
BRUNCH
One-night run too short at Blyth
Faith Monaghan would like to see
chocolate made the sixth official food
group.
"Big Girls Cry", a one -woman show
which played a much too short one-night
run at the Blyth Theatre on October 14,
chronicles the thoughts, reminiscences and
last-minute misgivings of Faith as she
prepares for an audition. A somewhat
plump, hesitantly feminist and singularly
addled actress, Faith invites the audience
into her home and her life as she does bat-
tle with a barrage of cosmetics, wrestles
with the eternal question of "what do I
wear" and comes face to face with a host
of personal demons.
The set, devised by prolific Canadian set
designer Roy Robitschek, is Faith
Monaghan's bathroom and dressing room,
complete with a bathtub, closet and
makeup table strewn with more cosmetics
and hair -care acoutrements than one could
shake a stick at. Faith moves about on
stage preparing for her audition at a
feminist collective - "Maybe I shouldn't
have done my eyelashes and legs..." - and
fires a monologue at the audience which is
often hilarious, at times deeply moving and
which always hits home.
We join her as she puts on a face after
her shower, eyeshadow in Bovine Brown
arid Tattletale Grey, Dusty Rose lipstick.
As she explains, she stays away' from
lipstick colours that, after an hour, "look
like there's dried chili stuck to your lips-"
Faith's musings lead us through the high
and low points of her life: trying to sur-
vive as an actress, a failed romance, the
recent death of her best friend, and life on
the chubbier end of the weight scale.
One particularly farcical scene involved
Faith's struggle with an obstinate pair of
jeans that stubbornly remained one size
too small. Trying to lose weight was dif-
ficult after growing up with an Iris
Mother who cooks "..as though generations
of the family will still have to get up
the table and pull ploughs for a living
bemoans Faith, fighting to pull her zipper
up with a coat hanger.
The brilliant script is the handiwork of
the actress herself, Heather Edson. A
seasoned performer, Heather is known to
Blyth audiences for her work in `Lilly,
Alta.' and `Cakewalk', and has worked
with a number of other theatre companies
throughout the province and across
Canada. "Big Girls Cry" is her first
writing effort, and this fact in itself is fit -
bre her talent. Performances scheduled untilp 7, after whichMs. Edson would like to see her script
adopted, possibly adapted, by other ac-
tresses while she moves onto other pro-
jects. She is soon to appear in `Footprints
on the Moon' at Montreal's Centaur
Theatre.
Speaking with Heather Edson after the
performance, she remarked on how
pleasantly surprised she was whenever
people, especially women, told her how
closely they were able to relate to the
script. Essentially it is a play about sur-
viving, living and laughing - at yourself, at
the world - and ;`keeping the faith".
It's a shame that there was only one
Blyth performance. If you ever have the
opportunity to catch `Big Girls Cry', take
a "leap of Faith" and treat yourself.
