Henry Bateman and son, whose home
is near Hespeler, were welcome visitors
with relatives and old friends here. 'Mr
Bateman was a former resident of the
5th con. He is well pleased with his
present location. •
Last week Peter Tarr had a: close call
while sawing pickets for wire fencing in
the saw mill. The slat flew from the
saw with great force and would have
bit him in the face had he net had the
presence of mind to dock his head, the
timber passing above him. Itewas a
close call.
At 6 o'clock Wednesday morning,
May 29th,Mary Matilda, familiary called
• Tillie, the second daughter of Teasdale
and Mrs Whitfield, con 13, passed peace-
fully away to the Better Land, aged 20
years, 8 ,months and 19 days. She had
been in failing health for years,
Graves disease being the cause to which
was added jaundice a couple of months
ago. With heroic pluck she fought
,-against the fatal disease, and despite all
that could be done.she departed this life.
Tillie suffered oonsiderably,at times but
there was a kopefnlnese and patiende
'about her that buoyed her up. Before
She went into nnoonsoionsnessdshe bade
the members,of the family an affection-
ate 'farewell with the assurance of meet-
ing in the Father's lionse bye and bye.

The Culross Cimino 1 met on Monday,
May 271b, as a Court of Revision and '
Appeal. Members were all present and
Reeve Donaldson was elected Chairman
of the board. Aseesser Johnston apo
pears to have given perfect satisfaction
in his valuations as there ware no ap-
peals. The name of S. L. Purvis was
ramoved from the roll and that of Her-
bert Stuckey snbstitntei. The Court
adjourned.
At 3 o'olook council met in regular
session. E G. Kna•z was appointed
road commissioner for the balance of
of the year and the assessor was paid the
balance of his a3lary. Oa motion of
Ballagh and Kuntz a grant of $150 was
made for the cutting of the hill on eons

&a 8 opened, the Reeve and Mr. Kuntz
were instructed to examine the same
and to report at the next meeting of
Council.

H, S. Arkell, lecturer in animal bus-
bandry at the Ontario Agricultural Col-
lege, Guelph, has resigned, to accept the
Ichief position in a like department at
the Macdonald igrionitural College, Ste
Anne de Bellevue, in Qaebao. Mr Ar-
kell was associated with Professor Day
in training the classes that oarried off
the prizes at the .Qhicago Live Stook
Exhibition.. Mr. Arkell is a former
well-known resident of:this township.
The Brandon Sun gives a good picture
of Mr. Gao. Porterfield, a former Best
Wawanosh boy, who was reoently ap- -
pointed to the position of Superintend-,
ent of the Brandon Post Office. Mr.
Porterfield has met with great success
since going West. He was for five years
assistant in the Brandon post office and
then two years as mail .clerk and now
his present position. The Brandon Sun
says he is recognized as one of the most
capable meh in the mail service he the
West. Mr. Porterfield's old friends here
.'will congratulate him on Ms promotion
and wish him continued success.
