Phone manager named ®®man of theyear"
On September 19, in Prince Rupert,
British Columbia, Mel Graham was nam-
ed Telephone Person of the Year.
Mr. Graham, who has been secretary -
treasurer of the Tuckersmith Municipal
Telephone System since 1964, and
manager of that system since 1966,
received the award from the Canadian
Independent Telephone Association
(CITA) during their convention.
He explained that the award has been
given out every year, since 1968, to the
person with outstanding achievements in
operating a telephone company, and who
is active in the associations related to
this undertaking.
The board of directors of the CITA pick
a committee to choose the telephone per-
son of the year, and any of the com-
panies may suggest names to be put
forth for the honor. Mr. Graham was
chosen for the award from among 43
companies across Canada; 30 in Ontario,
10 in Quebec, Edmonton Telephones, one
in Prince Rupert, and North-West
Telephones. -
Stressing the award is presented not
just for one year's activities, but for ac-
tivities over an extended period of time,
Mr. Graham discussed some of his own
achievements, and those of the
Tuckersmith system over the years.
He noted that while he has not been
really active in association work for a
period of time, from 1973 to 1978 he was
on the Ontario Telephone Association, and
in 1978 he served -as president for that
group. "I was active then, with toll
negotiations, and when I was president,
we hired a full time general manager for
the association," he said.
In the time he has spent with the com-
pany in Tuckersmith, Mr. Graham has
also seen many changes. When he
became secretary -treasurer in 1964, they
-had 1.250 stations. That figure has since
jumped to 2,250 stations, "At that time
MEL GRAHAM. manager of the Tuckersmith Phone System was recently named
Telephone Person of The Year, Emslie photo.
(19641, it was about five per cent private
lines; today we have 70 per cent private
lines," Mr, Graham added.
Financially, Tuckersmith has taken
their biggest turn. They had revenue of
$53,000 back in 1964, but in 1989"they will
have $950,000 in revenue.
Seaforth Manor residents en1
Good morning from the manor
residents!! '
Everyone "perked" up Monday morning
with some exercising to music. This was
followed by a less than calm discussion
about rail services - past, present and
future. Reminiscing about old times and
the role of the train left only the impres-
sion that residents felt rail service was
very important to our future.
Seaforth Public School grade 5/6 students
began their weekly visits to the Manor on
Tuesday morning. Lisa Wilson, ,Pat Grid-
zak. Stacy Linton, Caroline Dyck and
Trevor Jessome took part in activities in-
cluding piano playing, checker matches
and ring toss. Residents look forward to
next week's group!

afternoon during a sing -a -long. Carol's

Receiving the award proved to be a
pleasant surprise for Mr. Graham, who
wasn't informed he was to be the reci-
pient. He explained he always attends the
CITA conference, and this year was no
different. Only this year he received the
Telephone Person of the Year award.
