Members met at the hall by seven on Wednesday evening then drove to Blyth where another guest was picked up. Not knowing where they were going, they turned right through Blyth over the railroad tracks. Somehow the cars got parted, but they soon found their way to the first stop at Riverside Aviaries owned by Harm and Irene Thaler. There they were given a tour of all his different animals such as honey bears, monkeys, pheasants, waterfowl and exotic birds of all kinds, some we had never seen or heard of before. It was quite interesting. The members took off again shortly after 8:15 p.m. headed south on No. 4 highway through Clinton, then turned right landing at the Sloman Memorial Park. Beautiful flower gardens and a tree of interest, the ginkgo tree planted on May 17, 1982 was admired before members entered the School on Wheels. They were met by our hosts Margaret Sloman and Toby (Sloman) Raney who had been with their parents when they taught school and lived in the railroad car up north. It moved from place to place and children would come in from districts such as Malachi, Sioux I noteee Conmee, Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Sault Ste. Marie, Chapleau, White River, Foleyet, Capreol and North Bay. WI members shown slides by Margaret who gave a commentary as she went along. It was certainly quite different of how they get their education than now -a -lays. The business part was conducted by Marion Godkln opening in the usual man- ner. Berva Watson acted as secretary in the absence of Marjory Humphries. All members gave "A tip on how to protect the environment" for the roll call. Plans were made for the Blyth Festival noon luncheon the next day for approx- imately 90 people. A good report was given from the beef luncheon served in June. There are no more Wednesday lun- cheons served by the Institute until October. The Fair Display was discussed and the September meeting will be held a week earlier. There will be no August meeting. Ruth Axtrnater thanked Margaret and presented her with an envelope. Cup cakes were served by Maxine Marks and Berva Watson along with juice and tea by the hostess. Mark Gaskin called the congrega- tion to worship, followed by the Sanctus, The Psalms of Praise, Confession of Sin and assurance of pardon preceded the first hymn, and prayer of illumination. Rev.Mark gave a sermon based on they story of Mary and Martha: How we should all work together and it was most interesting. When he interjects little stories of his own home life, he makes all feel they have experienced the same things in their lives. Following the offering and prayers, the final hymn was sung. Rev. Mark, his wife Kathy and their two children (in- fant) has attended the Bible Study at the United Church and helped the leaders. He believes in the community working together. It was very pleasant to have many of the congregation from the United Church at the service. Special thanks to Joyce Pepper (of the United Church) for joining with the choir and lending her fine voice in the singing. Next Sunday will be the final one at Carmel until September, so it is hoped we can show again that community spirit still exists and join in their services for the month of August...
