tibn-of Agatha Christie's "Witness for the
Prosecution."
"Witness for the Prosecution" opened the
Grand Bend 'theatre's 18th season on
'Wednesday, June 28.
The first scene opens in a legal office with
an indolent but jaunty young man accused
of murdering a wealthy spinster who had
wflledtimtherfortune, and a condescending
lawyer who counts on obtairling'amacquittal
by 'means 'of an alibi -the young man was
home with bis wife when the murder was
committed. Butthat wife, a foreignerand a
cold one with the unlikely name Romaine,
not only denies the truth of the alibi on the
witness stand, but provides testimony that
can't fail to send her husband to the gallows.
"Witness" provides a rich script, a
deviously designed plot which is hailed as
the most ingenious melodrama devised by
Agatha Christie, a set as rich and deviously
designed as the aforementionned, and some
first rate acting.
Ian Deakin brings to life the flighty accus-
ed young man, Norah Kennedy is convinc-
ing as the devoted wife -devoted to seeing
her husband swing, and Vernon Chapman
and John Gardiner each have their
moments in roles as opposing attorneys.
"Witness" has all the trademark Agatha

Christie murder mystery twists, and follows
easily if you can get around a bit 'of long-
winded courtroom banter. An unforeseeable
last scene will sweep aside all your earlier
detective reasoning, and a sensation] last
scene will make you wince.
When it was first produced in London,
Englund in 1953, "Witness for the Prosecu-
tion," contained a cast of 30 characters, but
for the Huron Country Playhouse production
the cast has been reduced by enlisting 'help
from the audience to fill the courtroom jury
boa. A total of 253 audience volunteers will
be needed over the run of the play, and boa
office staff are taking names of interested
individuals'''who would like to become a part
of the action on stage.
Witness for the Prosecution's three 'week
run begins the 1989 summer season for the
Huron Country Playhouse, and is followed
by'itay Cooney's "Run For Your Wife", Neil
Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers", and
Roger and Harnmerstein's '`The King and
I".
