Canada Day was another great success.
A special thank you goes out to all the
Volunteers that made this day great. This
included the Seaforth and 'area firemen,
the Legion, the Seaforth Recreation and
Park Committee, the Lioness Club, Bill
Harris and Doris Hugill.
The firemen had approximately 500
people enjoy their breakfast and 30 peo-
ple then wore the breakfast off during the
Leisure Walk Poker Rally. The
Drumhead Service and Concert after-
wards was watched by many and. the
fireworks was the great finale of the day.
Results of the Leisure Walk Poker
Rally were: first High Hand - Ken and
Liz Cardno with a pair of aces, second
High Hand - Barb and Dennis Patrick
with a pair of Queens, and Low Hand
went to. Helen MacKenzie and James
Ross with a nine, high.

Plan for the
Summer is finally here and we can
moan about the heat and humidity in-
stead of the ice and snow. The good thing
about the warm weather is at least you
can still play golf. If you dress properly
and prepare yourself you will enjoy your
game even on the hottest days.
There are several ways to beat the
heat on the golf course. Some golfers get
up at the crack of dawn and get their 18
holes finished almost before the sun
wakes. Although their feet might be a lit-
tle wet from the dew, and they may have
to contend with sprinklers still on the
greens, and machinery idling nearby, for
many avid golfers the early morning is
the only time to play in the hot summer
months.

Golfers can also save their round until
after supper. This is a great time of day
to play. Things start to cool off and the
breeze is gentle and cool. Unfortunately
this is a popular time to head out and at
many courses the line ups after supper
make it difficult to get 18 holes com-
pleted before dark even with the long
days.
Many golfers have no choice' but to
play their game during the heat of a

quickly how the heat and humidity affect
their games and, plan ahead to beat the
heat. It's amazing how much more com-
fortable you will be' on the course if you
are prepared for the high temperatures
and blazing sun.
There's a new poster up in many
clubhouses - bright red, hard to miss and
printed courtesy of Golf Digest. There
are some great tips on how to beat the
heat, as well as a cartoon of a weary
player under a sizzling sun. Many of
these helpful hints will save your day this
summer.
Wear a hat and choose one that is well
ventilated and covers the top of your
head. Many players wear vistors and
these certainly shade the eyes, but they
don't protect the head from the sun's
rays: Wear light coloured cotton clothing.
Dark colours attract and absorb' heat
while light colours reflect it. So what if
cotton wrinkles and needs to be ironed,
the breeze will blow through it and the

fountains or coolers at several tees. If
not, take a thermos with you with plenty
of ice im t. Sometimes the bottles of juice;
with replaceable caps are handy because
you can sip gradually during your round.
Save the bottle and fill it with ice water
the next time out. Avoid alcohol while
you're playing. It may taste good at the
time but instead of quenching your thirst
it will dehydrate you and make you
sluggish.
Eat sparingly. Don't have a heavy
breakfast and then head right out onto
the course. Give your body time to digest
it and then while out there snack on cool
and light foods such as fruit. Don't carry
sandwiches made with salad cream etc.
in your golf bag. It doesn't take long for
bacteria to grow on hot days so use com-
mon sense when taking along snacks.
Many golfers will wear a cool damp
cloth around the back of their neck. Keep
a couple of clean J -cloths in your golf
bag and soak them with cold water at
every opportunity and wrap them around
your neck. You'd be amazed at how .good
it feels. This helps lower your body
temperature and you can use it to wipe
perspiration too.
Walk at an easy pace that keeps you
moving but doesn't strain you. Walk 3n
the shade as much as possible and when
waiting for the group ahead rest in a
shady spot. A cart with a seat on it can
be a- real boon. Sometimes a riding cart
can be just the ticket, especially one with
.a sunshade roof, but ,if that's out of the
question an easy pace is the next best
thing.
If you are playing 18 and head for the
club house between 9s remember that air
conditioning can cause your muscles to
tighten up so put a towel over your
shoulders or around your neck.
Last of all, but certainly not least,
don't forget your sunscreen. Make sure
you have plenty in your golf bag and use
it generously. A little baby powder on
your feet will soothe them and baby
powder also helps get that sticky hand,in-
to your golf glove. Many pros take their
golf glove off between shots to cool their
hand and keep the glove dry. Just be
sure not to pull the velcro during your
playing partner's backswiug.and don't
putting your glove back on when you
should be hitting your shot.
Sometimes it's just too hot to golf but
on those days when you must be out wi
the course plan for the heat and -play
your pest.
