objective.
"Weleel that the.objective can he reach-
ed, In !some cases 'those taking part in the
campaign have not completed their calls
and this 'means that returns from certain
areas are below estimates," said K.B.
McMillan, campaign chairman.
An earlier open season for hunting ducks
and geese was urged at a meeting of the
Seaforth Fish and Game Club Thursday
evening. Speakers pointed out that under
the present regulations, ducks have left the
area by the time the open season comes
about and as well geese have been down
here and have already left. The result is that
there is very little shooting possible
throughout the district.
Hildebrand Paint and Paper is opening a
new shop Thursday featuring wallpaper,
paint and decorating services in the former
Daly garage on Main Street. The building
which has been owned for some time by
Frank Kling, has been renovated and a new
front installed.
Rails to trails

recreation corridor concept.
Merano Wideman, a Mennonite from RR 1
Linwood, said the trail is not wide enough,
the bridges arehot safe, and said it would be
too expensive to convert the rails to trails
for what he says is minimal gain
To fortify his position, Mr. Wideman
presented a petition listing 90 per cent of the
property owners from Guelph to Monkton.
The 104 signatures indicated support of
reclaiming the land along the railway right-
of-way for agriculture. Mr. Wideman says
over 50 per cent of the farmers said they
want the land back to keep their fields
square. and to keep people off their
property
It is Mr. Wideman's intention to continue
gathering signatures of landowners along
the route right through to Goderich
"May the idea of a trail just be a trailing
in our mmds." concluded Mr. Widemar.
.Another Mennonite speaker remarked
that the trail would only be usable for bug-
gies if traffic on the rnute were all going in
the same. direction and at the same speed.
Landowners wondered how the trail would
be policed. how trespassing and vandalism
could be prevented, who would hold liability
for the trail, who would maintain the trails,
where would access for the trails be
available. and could the trail be compatable
for both motorized vehicles and people on
foot. skits or horsebacksial, etc
- But not all the information gathered at the
meeting was against the rails to trails.
The president of the Golden Triangle
Snowmobile Club called the trail "an ex-
cellent means to link, clubs across Ontario "
He said this corridor would be an important
addition to the extensive system in Ontario
and Quebec.
Jeff Mansfield is a hiker who also has the
administrative job of taking complaints in-
curred along the trail between Alton and
Dunville. In the past years he has only had
two complaints, and both were about non
biking club members using the trail.
"Concerns about vandalism and other
criminal activities are misdirected." he
said, and added the establishment of the
.route as a recreation facility would actually
reduce acts of vandalism etc, by making the
path more accessible and more open to the
public
A representative from the Federation of
Snowmobilers said there are snowmobile
wardens in the federation who have been
trained by the OPP and patrol to prevent
vandalism, trespassing, etc. Seven of these
wardens were at the meeting.
After voicing their concerns in an open
forum, those attending the meeting were
broken up into groups of landowners, user
groups and supporters, and public officials.
With the aid of members from the steering
committee these groups came up with lists
of their concerns and positions
The user groups said they were aware of
the problems of landowners, but are work-
ing diligently to help solve•these problems.
They suggested wardens and trail captains
would be used to police trail users, and said
if the trail were made a public recreation
facility it could be routinely policed by the
OPP, whereas if it were private property it
couldn't.
The pubhc officials were primarily con-
cerned with the effect such a receation cor-
ridor would have on municpalities, who
would maintain it, acid who . would hold
!lability. Other concerns were safety; com-
patability of uses, access and trespass.
They saw merit in keeping the corridor in
one piece as a provincial property in case it
is needed for utility use.
Of the landowners present, 95 per cent
owned property adjoining the corridor.
They presented a long list of concerns in-
cluding property values, the province's con-
tinuous ownership of the cooridor, fire con-
trols, weeds, fencing, parking of trail user's
vehicles, construction of drainage facilities
across the corridor, and some already
mentioned.
All these .,t oncerns .were raised in a con-
trolled and ataiable atmfisphere,.and were
be brought to the attention of the provin-
' terministerial committee .when the
steerin committee.metwith it on Tuesday.
