Korea is new home
for Bruss'ls porkers
BY RON WASSiNK
K nnwn in Canada for their extensive cattle
and swine breeding program. Bodmin
Limited of RR5. Brussels, was one of r 12
Ontario swine breeding operations chosen by
a Korean delegation to export to Korea.
Spokesman for Bodmin4itnited, Ross
Procter, said the sale was made'through Dr.
Brian Brandenberg, a swine consultant from
Guelph. Dr. Bradenberg• who operates a
sw Inc operation in the Philipines, met with
George Procter two months ago and chose 25
pigs which he suggested should be 'pedi-
greed. Two weeks ago. two Korean repre-
sentatives travelled to Bodmin Limited and
selected six Landrace gilts. four and a half'
months of age, weighing approximately 150
pounds each.
Ross Procter said the reason other
countries look ttrCanada for quality breeding
stock is "Canada has a good reputation.
health wise. Countries which have a good
many problem diseases. have diseases which
are not a problem here. Countries around the
world look to Canada for disease-free
Itsestock." A second reason is the Canadian
Record of Production testing program is
resugni,ed around the world.
Bodmin Limited has been in swine
production since 1912. Their breeding
program consists of 180 sows made up of four
breeds including Landrace, Yorkshire,
Hampshire and Duroc.
Besides shipping pigs across Canada.
Bodmin has also exported to Cabe. They also
hold the distinction of having several of their
boars used at the artificial insemination unit
in Woodstock. Mr. Procter said of the current
list of 25 Yorkshire boars at the A.I. unit, five
carry the Bodmin bloodline.
He explained all their breeding stock is
pedigreed. In addition, Bodmin Limited is
enrolled with Ontario government in a
Certified Herd Policy, where health of swine
is constantly monitored.
The Korea bound pigs were delivered to a
collecting, depot at the Listowel sales barn by
Dave McIntosh whois in charge of the sales
barn at Bodmin Limited. Mr. Procter said the
price paid by the Kofearl buyers "is in line
with Ontario sales."
A spokesman for J.M. Walker Farms
International, a cattle and swine exporting
• company in Aylmer, said 100 Ontario pigs
were airlifted to Korea last Sunday.
As with cattle exports. the "ex -porkers"
will face a quarantine period. With its first
export of pigs to Korea, the exporting firm
which specializes in cattle exports, has just
recently entered the swine export market. In
addition to the pigs, 400 heifers were also
exported to the same country.
