Oldtimers ready for game BY BRYAN PETER Many familiar faces will be skating onto the ice surface at teaforth and District Comm nity .Centre at 2:00 p.m. S day,, December 12. Organizers are confident that a full house will be treated to some good e old-fashioned hockey ' the way it dosed to be played" with great passing, skating and team work. The locals, the Seaforth Beavers, consist of 14 play- ers, half of which starred in Intermediate 'B' hockey in -Seaforth when the team began in 1961-62. These seven players, Jack Mc- iiwain, Ken Doig, Don Mor- ton, Ray Anstett, Gar Baker, Bob Beuttenmiller and Ed Dolmage, have played to- gether for 20 years! Players must be 35 years of age to qualify for Oldtimer hockey, which has grown enormously over the last .five years. The Oldtimers team was started in 1976-77after the Int. 'B' folded due to lack of players. Many players were still intere d in _playing' hockey but not at thevipor- ous pace of Intermediate which involved a lot of travelling. Their first year the Beav- ers had 19 players and played in the Northern lea- gue. The next year the team went to the Southern group with most teams coming from London and area. Some players have quit and new ones have been added as they reached the magic age of 35. Most recent additions have' been Bill Weber, Paul Rau and Don Vipond (coach of Cambridge Hornets Senior 'A'). BIG SAVES - In goal, veteran Gar Baker still comes up with the big saves. Newt Collins backs up Gar and helps keep the team running in the right direction with his continued dedication The defence has 20 year veterans Ray Anstett, Ed Dolmage and Don Morton still performing at a high level. Rounding out the defence are Bob Chereos ftom Mitchell Dick Bedard from Zurich, both of whom have been with the team since 1976-77. Seaforth's oldest player (at a young 54) is the real veteran, Ken Doig. The . dressing room wouldn't be the same without Ken's iokfes 1 L.e BY DAVE BROOME The Seaforth industrial Hockey League quietly pass- ed the half way point last ccckend. It was a significant happening because it was the last time the league will have to travel out of town to play. This Sunday night the I.H.L. will (hopefully) move into our new arena and thus shed some of the major headaches that have plagued the six team citcuit for the past year. While the absence of win- ter is out biggest mystery so far this year the problems of the Industrial Hockey League are not the enigma our weather is. The arca of Southern On• l,rio basked in record shat - and good humour. Ken still plays the game with the same zest as 20 years ago and is a real team leader. Another 20 year . veteran, .Hack Mcllwain, plays along- side Ken and still provides great leadership on and off the ice. Jack is still consider ed the "coach", but after 20 years, most guys know what to do.' George Coveny from Mitchell is the third member of this line and his smart play -making, results in many goals for the line. , Veteran Bob Beuttenmiller plays alongside two young- sters, Paul Rau and Hill Weber, trying to keep them on the straight and narrow path to the goal. Don Vipond, `a new addition this year, provides some young " legs and a good shot to the Beavers. TWO GAMES A WEEK, The Beavers play in a regular schedule with an average of ' two .mes a week. This year, the Beavers were finalists in the '13' division in the Sarnia tour- nament. They play in the Niagara Falls tournament, in January, llderton in March and Kincardine in April. The referee for the match should be well known, as either Vern Buffey or 13111 Ftyday will • be head man. Both of these fellows have called a tremendous number of the N.H.L. games in their respective careers. One linesman is Terry Craig who is well known as "Too Tall" and is trying desperately to reach the magic age of 35. The NHL Oldtimers have 10 year pro Peter McDuffe who played with St. Louis, Kansas City, Rangers and Detroit as one goalie. Wayne Woods (NHL - New York and Detroit). (WHA - Calgary and Vancouver) is the team's other goalie. The defence is anchored by Harry ,Howell, a 21 year' star with New York, Oakland and Los Angeles, former Ranger captain and all stir, Norris trophy winner and Hockey Hall of gamer. Bob Wall joins the defence as a 13 year pro with Detroit, Los Angeles, and St. Louis. He was the first captain of the Los Angeles Kings, Rod Selling was a fifteen year perennial NHL all-star de- fenceman with New York, St. Louis and Toronto. He pla3( ed with Team Canada in the '72 Russian series. John Miszuk rounds out the de- fence. He played for Minne- - sota and Philadelphia in the NHL and Vancouver and Calgary in the WHA. CENTRE ICE Atcentre ice, Syl Apps Jr., is an 111 year pro with the Rangers, L.A., Kings and Pittsburgh. Keith McCreary is a sixteen year veteran with Montreal, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. He its a former . captain of both the Penguins and the Plaines. Jimmy Harrison was a centre for the Maple Leafs and a former captain off the Edmonton Oilers. Another centre, Mur- ray Halllayed NHL with Chicago, Detroit and Van- couver and WHA with Nous- ' ton. i Left winger Ron Ellis was a star for 17 years with the Maple Leafs and played on the last Stanley Cup winning Toronto team in 1967. Sid Smith joins the left side who was a three time all-star, three time Stanley Cup win- ner and two time Lady Byng winner, a 10 year veteran - and former captain of the Maple Leafs. George Mor- rison was a star for eight years with St. Louis, selected College All-American and high scoring forward with the Calgary Cowboys W.H.A. Dean Prentice joins the left wingers. Dean was' a star for 22 years with Boston. Detroit and New York, scoring 39-4 goals in an outstanding NHL career. RIGHT WANG On right wing, Andy Bath- gate les the pack. Andy is a fa er captain of the Rangers, winner of the NHL Most Valuable Player Award, League Scoring Champion, Stanley Cup Winner, four time all-star and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Also on right wing is Rene Roberts, a high • scoring all star with Pitts- burgh, Buffalo and Toronto. Well known Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster, Brian McFarlane, has- played for the NHL Oldtimers for over 13 years and will be on the right side. The game promises to be very exciting and entertain- ing with these two clubs capable of playing great hockey. er for debut tering temperatures last week but the I.H.L. has been stuck in a labyrinth of difficul- ties. - Being forced to trek to out of town sites at lousy•times has contributed 'to inflated scores and a host of no- shows. All the problems should disappear when the I.H.L. takes up residence in our magnificent new building. It is not an insignificant achievement by any stretch of the imagination that the people of Seaforth and sur- rounding area accomplished this act in the time of recessitin -depression. The new community centre is an attractive structure that oozes a magnetism that will not ebb for some time. Bowling standings COMMERCIAL STANDINGS Robins 20.
