BY KRIS SVELA
Next year should prove to be a big•year
for sports in Seaforth with the community
hosting Sportfest '83 on August 12, 13 and
14. Approximately 3000 participants are
slated in several sport categories incorpo-
rating the use of all the sports facilities in
town and the ball diamonds and tennis
courts in Winthrop. Walton, Dublin and
Vanastra. 1 h event is sponsored by the
Lake Huron Zone Recreation Association
(LH -GRA) and .involves the counties of
Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth.
Sportsfest is a sport festival weekend
designed to increase communication, co-
ordination and participation among the
communities in the Lake Huron Zone. Its
goal is also to encourage competition
between .community sports groups on an
ongoing basis.
According to Seaforth recreation direct•
or, Bryan Peter, the events will encompass
several categories of baseball. swimming
events, tennis, soccer, darts, shuffleboard
and a wide variety of other sporting events.
The association hopes to add skeet
shooting and basketball to the list of events
in Sportfest '83.
Mr. Peter is hoping to get more
volunteers to help organize tennis, basket-
ball and men's slowpitch events, for the
Icical Sportfest committee.
Much of the funding for Sportsfest is
through grants from municipalities and
towns in the area. The Seaforth ,n•, ,

Seaforth council. The association also has
approximately $1000 in a reserve fund for
any costs that might arise during the
three-day event.
HOCKEY
The Seaforth Beavers Oldtimers are
preparing for their match against the
N.H.L. Oldtimers scheduled for December
12, in the new arena. The team did well in a
hockey tournament in Sarnia over the
weekend, losing out in the finals to a team
from Cleveland. It should be an exciting
match on December 12.
CENTENAIRES WIN
The Seaforth Centenaires Junior D team
pulled off a big win on Sunday as they
trounced Mitchell 11-4. The team had little
difficulty defeating the Hawks in a revenge
game, which featured superb goaltending
and solid play. The Centenaires will play
Exeter in two games on the weekend in
Hensall.

Ce 4tenaires fake Mitchell
11-4 in revenge match
BY GAILY GRAY
. The Seaforth Jr. Cente-
naires skated and worked
hard for a full 60 minutes and
took advantage of some shaky
Mitchell goaltending as they
rolled over the Hawks 11-4
before a large crowd in
Hensall Sunday afternoon.
The win leaves the Cente-
naires tied with the Hawks in
bottom place in the six team
grouping but only 1 point
behind the fourth place Exe-
ter. Hawks. Seaforth and
Exeter tangle this weekend in
a home and home match up.
The Centenaires jumped
into a q'uick 2-0 lead in the
opening period on goals by
defenceman Ken Higgins and
hot scoring Dave McLlwain.
Mitchell came right back with
tallies by Daryl Dietz and
Dean Westman (power play
goal) to even the score at 2
goals apiece. Shifty Jamie
McClinchey gave the Cen-
tenaires a 3-2 lead when he
scored on a power play goal
after being set up perfectly by
Mark McLlwain.' Mitchell
outshot the Centenaires 11-7
in the period but were foiled
on any good scoring chances
by veteran goalie Dan Mc-
Clure.
The second frame saw the
Centenaires display their
best offensive power in recent
years as they pumped seven
unanswered goals past the
Hawk goaltending duo of
Mike MacDonald (first five)
and Dave Fischer. Scoring for
the Centenaires (who outshot
the Hawks 18-9 in the period)
were John Hicknell, Mark
McLlwain, Pete Van Drunen,
Jim Campbell, Dave Murray
and Dave McLlwain with his
second of the game. Mitchell
pulled their starting goalie
(MacDonald) after Murray's
goal. MacDonald failed in a
clearing attempt on the soft
shot from far out,
Leading 10-2 going into the
third frame, the Centenaires
seemed to be letting up and it
wasn't uptil after Mitchell
scored their final two goals by
Jeff Pauli and Doug Sykes
(both on deflections which
McClure had no chances on)
that the locals picked up
where they left off earlier.
Dave Fischer in the tawks
net made several big saves in
the last half of the period as
the Centenaires created sev-
eral good scoring chances.
