The Huron Expositor, 1982-11-17, Page 11• THE HURON EXPOSITOR, NOVEMBER 17, 1982 — All Sportsfest '83 3 BY KRIS SVELA Next year should prove to be a big•year for sports in Seaforth with the community hosting Sportfest '83 on August 12, 13 and 14. Approximately 3000 participants are slated in several sport categories incorpo- rating the use of all the sports facilities in town and the ball diamonds and tennis courts in Winthrop. Walton, Dublin and Vanastra. 1 h event is sponsored by the Lake Huron Zone Recreation Association (LH -GRA) and .involves the counties of Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth. Sportsfest is a sport festival weekend designed to increase communication, co- ordination and participation among the communities in the Lake Huron Zone. Its goal is also to encourage competition between .community sports groups on an ongoing basis. According to Seaforth recreation direct• or, Bryan Peter, the events will encompass several categories of baseball. swimming events, tennis, soccer, darts, shuffleboard and a wide variety of other sporting events. The association hopes to add skeet shooting and basketball to the list of events in Sportfest '83. Mr. Peter is hoping to get more volunteers to help organize tennis, basket- ball and men's slowpitch events, for the Icical Sportfest committee. Much of the funding for Sportsfest is through grants from municipalities and towns in the area. The Seaforth ,n•�, , • antams Saturday, Nov. 13, the Seaforth Bantams started off their regular hockey season victoriously by over powering Clinton with the score of 7.3. Seaforth !e4 3-0 at the end of the first period with goals scored by Scott Driscoll, Jeff Reid and Chris Cardno. to is hoping to receive a $2000 grant from Seaforth council. The association also has approximately $1000 in a reserve fund for any costs that might arise during the three-day event. HOCKEY The Seaforth Beavers Oldtimers are preparing for their match against the N.H.L. Oldtimers scheduled for December 12, in the new arena. The team did well in a hockey tournament in Sarnia over the weekend, losing out in the finals to a team from Cleveland. It should be an exciting match on December 12. CENTENAIRES WIN The Seaforth Centenaires Junior D team pulled off a big win on Sunday as they trounced Mitchell 11-4. The team had little difficulty defeating the Hawks in a revenge game, which featured superb goaltending and solid play. The Centenaires will play Exeter in two games on the weekend in Hensall. WRITERS? As mentioned in this space last week. the Expositor is hoping to expand its coverage of sports in the town and area. So far we have received an indication from the Seaforth Minor Hockey Association that their coaches and managers will be sending in write-ups of the games. However. we need more people from other sports groups to contribute, If you are interested contact the Expositor. eat CII the second period Clinton scored 2 goals. 1 each by Troy Falconer and Travis Lyndon. Seaforth came on strong- er again in the third period with Trevor Price scoring 2 goals and scoring one each to 73 were Mike Betties and Mark Stapleton. Troy Falconer scored for Clinton, their only goal in this period. The teams Seaforth play this year in "CC" Bantam are Clinton, Mitchell and Wingham. Atoms trounce Clintor The Seaforth Atoms play- ed their first game of the season in Clinton on Sat., Nov. 13. Seaforth defeated Clinton 13-2. Goal scorers for Seaforth were Ray Murray and Jason Schoonderwoerd with a hat trick; Paul McLlwain. Brent van den Akker and Jason McNichol each with two; and Doug Campbell with a single. Junior 'D' hockey '¢ Ce 4tenaires fake Mitchell 11-4 in revenge match BY GAILY GRAY . The Seaforth Jr. Cente- naires skated and worked hard for a full 60 minutes and took advantage of some shaky Mitchell goaltending as they rolled over the Hawks 11-4 before a large crowd in Hensall Sunday afternoon. The win leaves the Cente- naires tied with the Hawks in bottom place in the six team grouping but only 1 point behind the fourth place Exe- ter. Hawks. Seaforth and Exeter tangle this weekend in a home and home match up. The Centenaires jumped into a q'uick 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by defenceman Ken Higgins and hot scoring Dave McLlwain. Mitchell came right back with tallies by Daryl Dietz and Dean Westman (power play goal) to even the score at 2 goals apiece. Shifty Jamie McClinchey gave the Cen- tenaires a 3-2 lead when he scored on a power play goal after being set up perfectly by Mark McLlwain.' Mitchell outshot the Centenaires 11-7 in the period but were foiled on any good scoring chances by veteran goalie Dan Mc- Clure. The second frame saw the Centenaires display their best offensive power in recent years as they pumped seven unanswered goals past the Hawk goaltending duo of Mike MacDonald (first five) and Dave Fischer. Scoring for the Centenaires (who outshot the Hawks 18-9 in the period) were John Hicknell, Mark McLlwain, Pete Van Drunen, Jim Campbell, Dave Murray and Dave McLlwain with his second of the game. Mitchell pulled their starting goalie (MacDonald) after Murray's goal. MacDonald failed in a clearing attempt on the soft shot from far out, Leading 10-2 going into the third frame, the Centenaires seemed to be letting up and it wasn't uptil after Mitchell scored their final two goals by Jeff Pauli and Doug Sykes (both on deflections which McClure had no chances on) that the locals picked up where they left off earlier. Dave Fischer in the tawks net made several big saves in the last half of the period as the Centenaires created sev- eral good scoring chances. ' Jamie McClindhey fired his second power play goal of the game for the •Centenaires only goal of the third. Again the Centenaires outshot the Hawks by a margin of 13-10, Shots o,fnt goal in the game , were 38-30 in favor o the Centenaires. Both teams re- ceived' thirteen minor, penal- ties apiece, Centenaire Scents: Dave McLlwain continues to lead the Centenaires in scoring with 15 points based on ten goals and five assists. Three players, Campbell, Mc- Clinchey and Van Drunen are tied for second with 10 pts. apiece. Mark McLlwain who has only playedin five of the Centenaires ten games pick- ed up five points in the Skate Sharpening Now Available $100 per pair Mitchell game. Goaltender Dan McClure having always been noticed for his excellent puck stopping helped the Centenaire offence out against Mitchell by collecting two assists. The Centenaires at this writing rank fourth in their six team division with 49 goals scored and third in goals against with 55, Don't forget this Sunday's game in Hensall at 3:30 against arch rival, Exeter Hawks. On an ending note, the Centenaires could sure use your cheering when they meet the Hawks in Exeter Friday night at 8:30. Pee Wee 'As' tie first game Nov. 12 the Seaforth Pee Wees played their first game of the season in Clinton. It was an exciting and close game right from the start. Within one -minute of play in the first period Clinton had opened the scoring, catching Seaforth by surprise. Aftcr that both teams played better with some gond goaltending keeping the score down. Towards the end of the first period Seaforth finally found the net with a short• handed goal by Joey Smith, assisted by Terry Gray. Shortly after that Joey Smith scored again assisted by Mike Schoonderwoerd and Don Brown to put Seaforth ahead 2-1. However Clinton scored once more to tic the game 2-2 at the end of the first period. Both Clinton goals were scored by .Teff Jewitt. In the second period the players had a field day with play sec sawing hack and forth resulting in 10 goals being scored. 5 for Seaforth and 5 for Clinton, Seaforth presents A Christmas Bonanza Scoring went as tollows: Terry Gray. unassisted for Seaforth, followed by two Clinton goals which were answered by Seaforth ,with goal by Pat Moylan assisted by Terry Gray and Joey Smith and a goal by Dwayne Price assisted by Terry Gray. 'Then Clinton scored three more goals which were an- swered by Seaforth in the final minutes with unassisted goals by Mike Schoonder- woerd and Joey Smith end - Mg the second period with a 7-7 tie. In the third period both teams skated hard and checked closely: resulting in a good period of hockey and keeping the game at a 7-7 tie. Line-up this year for Pee Wees is • Bill Tremeer.
