The Huron Expositor, 1982-11-17, Page 9SI - Seaforth artist has. unique style BY RON WASSINK Arc you one of the many people who doesn't know what to give a friend or relative far Christmas? Or are you one of many who simply can't afford expensive Christmas gifts? If so, Alf Dale of Seaforth has the perfect solution to fill your gifting needs. A resident of eaforth for the past seven years. Alf is a well-known oil painter. The 35 -year-old artist has completed several paintings and sketchs and is busy painting to meet the Christmas rush. You may ask. "what's so great about an oil painting?" A glance at the work of Mr. Dale, which is of exceptional detail and quality, and watching him at work. will tell you his oil paintings will be treasured for years to come. Unlike most artists, Mr. Dale does not use his hands when painting. With brush clenched between his teeth and by moving his head, Alf has mastered art in his own way. Married for six weeks "and still honeymooning';, Alt' was swimming in Chesley Lake, near Allenford, 17 years ago. He was 18 -years -old. Spotting a raft in the water, Alf climbed on, dove off and has been paralized from the neck down ever since. Alf said the water was deep. but he just hit it at:"the wrong angle. At the time of his accident, Alf was employed in an Owen Sound hospital for the mentally handicapped. SKETCHING When he was nearing the end of his stay in hospital, a nurse approached Alf with the prospect of sketching, using his mouth. 1 She gave him a pencil and Alf frustrated by his disability, printed "Go to hell." H laid the , peil down d d o sketchingncor aintianng untdiil lenssonst wereattempt offered by CHSpS art teacher Ron Walker of Blyth, three years ago. Following the 30 -hour course, Alf said "I've been on my LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE Ent @MonON@fig THE HURON EXPOSITOR, NOVEMBER 17, 1982 — A9 TURKEY BINGO own ever since." In conjunction with the art course, offered through a vocational rehabilitation program, Alf received a new set of wheels. His movement was previously hampered when he used a conventional wheel chair. With a new electric wheel chair, -Alf was able to come and go as he pleased. The new chair provided necessary transportat- ion as Alf travelled Seaforth streets in search of new ideas for his oil painting hobby. Mention should b emade of the fancy electronic gadgetry in the Dale home. Television. telephone. HAM and citizen band radios, electric light, and door bell intercom are et the tip of Alf's tongue. Everything connected to a special devide known as a "Tose", made , available through the Ontario March of Dimes. It can be operated using a sequence of signals acti ated by his tongue. Connected to the Tose is a microphone type of device beside Alf's left shoulder from viihich the signals are made. THE MONEY HELPS Oil painting has opened a new door for Alf. Money he receives is used to supplement his income, to assist in insurance payments, taxes, and general household costs. In the past three years, he estimates that 75 to 100 paintings have been completed. Although his specialty is landscapes, Alf said he completed a portrait of two black Labrador Retrievers, and he has painted house scenes. Paintings range from 8" x 10 to 12" x 16" in size. A larger portrait takes 15 to 20 hours to complete. ' Alf says his paintings are known throughout Ontario. Recently a collection of his works were on tour from the C.N.E. in Toronto to Niagara Falls and Guelph. The Seaforth hospital walls are adorned with five of his paintings. Alf was pleased that visitors from England and Holland for Egmondville United Church YULETIDE BUS TOUR 8 P.M. ST.
