KERSMITH A10 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, NOVEMBER 3, 1982 Fantasies are by V igh People are always con- cerned with current events and problems with our econ- dmy. We should be concern- ed. There is a lot going on in the world that we should be aware of. However, with all of our problems. we tend to escape once in a while and live in a fantasy world. Last Tuesday night II spent all of two hours watching the Miss Canada pageant on channel 13. Right from the very beginning 1 chose the girl I thought should win. 1 was excited when Miss Univ- erse. -Karen Baldwin walked out on stage each time and wondered what it would be like to be in her shoes. The whole idea of a beauty pageant is exciting, whether it be for the fall fair queen in Seaforth, Miss Canada or Miss Universe. I'm sure that many 'residents of Seaforth who watched Miss Universe last July found themselves rooting for Karen Baldwin, just because she lives so ' close to us. There aren't too many articles about London's Miss Universe that 1 have not read, simply because 1 love a happy ending. The whole story of Karen Baldwin is like Scry eg the People of Tuckers Ii h •'.g 'With Honesty f,)nd Faarsness w FOR REEVE '•R --E/ cf Vote RIENY VAN LOON for Council IN TUCKERSMITH • A FARMER FOR 18 YEARS IN TUCKERSMITH I favour controlled spending In Tucker - smith Township, and am strongly opposed to doing away with severances. GIVEN UNDER MY NAND this 21st day of October, 1982. J.R. McLACHLAN Returning Officer Township of Tuckersmith. 9 a fairy-tale. A beautiful girl ffrom a close family wins herself a very big title and suddenly her very ordinary life-style is changed into one of much glamour and excitement. FAIIRY TALES There are other fairy-tales that we find ourselves wound up in. Take for example, Prince Charles, Princess Diana and Prince William. We picture this family as very young and full of love. and happiness. Many young girls dream of meeting and marrying a handsome young prince.-Unfortuantely living in Huron County we have little chance of doing so. The best we can do is follow the royal couple's marriage and watch Prince William grow. SMALL CHANCE Another fantasy a lot of people dream of is holding a lottery ticket worth thou- sands of dollars. Although the chances of winning many of these draws are one in a million, it is always fun to fanticize about how you could spend your prize. Just ima-' gluing the type of car you would buy, or the trips you would take is almost as much fun as doing these things. (Well, not quite!) Television can take credit for a lot of our fantasies and daydreams. Programs such as "You Asked For It", "That's Incredible", "Thrill of a Lifetime" . and, "Real People", are becoming more and more popular. We love to learn about babies who can water ski, men who can pull transport truck with htheir teeth, and maids who become millionaires for one day. We love to believe such things. It is hard to believe that people can appear on television for wrestling with pigs or solving the Rubik's cube with their toes, but they do. SOAP OPERAS The soap operas shown on television on weekday after- KOdoo 'Min cod On-bcw@c no good but noons are another part of our fantasy world. We become so involved in these imaginary characters that one tends to think that these soap -stars are real. 'It is funny to think that someone who is unfamil- iar with the soap operas may think that the characters are real-life figures when listening to others discuss the shows. Lots of times 1 realize that 1 speak of soap opera stars as 1! they are good friends of mine or neighbours. Last week I found myself rushing home everyday after school to watch Texas and find out if Ashleigh Marshall has been found. Everyday 1 was dis- appointed to see that she was still missing. There are other television shows that put us in a dream world as well. Take for instance "Fantasy Island" and the "Love Boat.'' "Fan- tasy Island" is a vacation resort where people go to have their fantasies fulfilled. The mysterious Mr. Rorke has a wav or making these wishes come true. It is really unbelievable but we watch it anyway. 1 find that "Love Boat' is an unrealistic, exaggerated show, but 1 still watch it faithfully. Any show on TV that has a strange plot but "could happen" seems to be popular. We live in a dream world. I'm becoming more and, more convinced of this every day. We sit and read our horo- scopes and watch television every day, and our hopes and dreams get nowhere. We have to go out and achieve, do our best and make our dreams come true.
