THE FALL ACHIEVEMENT night for Huron county homemaking clubs
was held In the Howick community centre Monday. Members completing
18 clubs were awarded advanced honours and presented with a silver pie
server. This is the highest provincial 4-H award. Home economist, Jane
Muegge, left, presented the servers to Kathy Pentland, Gorrie; Jan Faust,
Gorrie 1 and Diane Elston, Cranbrook 2. (Wassink photo)

It is the time for witches, ghosts, andtall
kinds of fearsome creatures to prowl. The
time for "Trick or Treat" kids. It's
Hallowe'en! Get your bowl of treats ready
with offerings for their "goodie'.' bags. They
will surely come knocking on your door. How
can you dare to refuse a handout to a witch
who could cast a spell or a ghost who could
haunt your dreams. Be prepared.
There will be an election in' Brussels.
Monday. November 8 with five nominees
seeking the four council seats. Reeve Calvin '
Krauter, who has given so many years of his
life in service to this village. retains that
position by acclamation.
Grey Township ratepayers will vote ona
full slate of officers. Two will run for reeve,
two for deputy -reeve and nine for the five
council seats.
It is to be hoped that all eligible voters in
both municipalities will make an effort to get
out and cast their ballots. If you do not vote
you have little right to complain about what
happens later. Vote as you like but first
consider carefully who is best qualified for
the position to be held.

Prime Minister Trudeau's three-part mini
talks last week brought nothing but criticism
from other party leaders. it is doubtful that
they inspired much hope, in many Cana.
dians, for any real progress toward economic
recovery in the near future, He put the
solving of the problem squarely in the hands
of all Canadians. He stressed that we must
have faith and trust in each other and in the
Government; that Canadians must realistic-
ally accept conditions.' pull together and
share the nation's burdens. It seems clear to
most, 1 would think, that we have all already
felt the weight of those burdens. He asserted
that this country is very much at the mercy of
global economic conditions. Reasonable
people must agree with him on that. Asking
for faith and trust in government is another
matter. It creates considerable strain when
we reflect on the past performance of that
body. Trudeau's talks seemed only a re -hash
of what he has said before. There was no
announcement of any new, concrete govern-
ment programs to be undertaken to alleviate
our economic troubles.
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's appear-
ance showed he is weary and troubled. In
spite of whai one might think of his
performance, and that of his government.
one could not but feel sympathy for him.
It may be a small cottage by a waterfalls. a
mansion on a hill or a shabby, old house on a
quiet village street, if unselfish love with
understanding of the needs of others, or
warm memories, abound within "there will
be no place like home."
It is regretable there were so few Brussels
residents at the ratepayers meeting earlier
this month. It seems to imply that people of
this village have little interest in municipal
affairs which should be of concern to all of us.
If we had complaints. suggestions, or wanted
explanations from our elected representa-
tives. that was the place to speak out. Too
much of this is done on the streets, among
individuals and groups, throughout the year,
instead of at the proper time and place.
Municipal election time is here. It will be
interesting to see what will happen. At time
of writing (October 16th) nothing has been
determined.
