The Huron Expositor, 1982-10-06, Page 19A6 - THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOS P 6, 1882 Centenaires continue building process BY KRIS SVELA The road to building a successful hockey club is often marked with some se- vere pot holes. That is the lesson the Seaforth Centen- aires Junior D club •learned' ,after they dropped their first two exhibition games by scores of 9-5 to Exeter and 7-1 to a powerful Tavistock club. The Centenaires are in the midst of building a new team with 16 new players presently on the roster, together with several veterans from pre- vious years. The.combination of young and old,, experienc- ed and inexperienced play- ers, was evident in both games. Up against seasoned players on other teams, the young Centenaires, have a great deal of difficulty set- tling into the junior D style of hockey'. The problem can be solved with a little more experience, confidence and a helping hand 'from the older players. At the center of the team is veteran goaltender, Dan Mc- Clure. He made some excel- lent saves in both games, but seems weak on angle shots. McClure, now playinb his last year- will be able to help the team in its re -building phase, through his experience in net. During the game against Tavistock, the defence was weak both on the point and in front of their own net. There was very little policing and as a result, Tavistock forwards were given several scoring opportunities from the slot position. The loss of two key defencemen, due to game misconducts they received in Exeter, could be one of the reason for rite weak deven• reason tor the weak defensive play. The defencemen will have to learn the value of solid shots from the point. On the forward line there arc several promising new- comers. Jim Campbell, Jamie McClinchey, Dwayne La- porte, and David McLlwain. preformed well, along with several other older players. However, the team lacks a solid passing and forecheck• ing system. They are also weak in the shots nn goal department. The basic problem is the lack of team experience and interaction between team me- mbers, on the forward line, defensive line and as a unit. A proper passing system to carry the puck across the blueline. and more, points shots should help the team score more goals. It is essent- ial that the players, develop a tenet attitude if they hope to win 'against well organized' clubs in the league. There is no doubt the team has an ample supply of talent' in their new players and the veterans. The new upstarts should prove to be the magic ingredient the team will need to win in the next couple of years. With the completion of the new arena. more playing experience and fan support, the Centenaires should have no difficulty building a solid team. Once the club learns to play together they should prove to be top playoff contenders in the near future. COME TO STEWAi;T'S FOR OYS J ,EAR SKILLS IMPROVE -The Seaforth Centenaires sharpen their skills during a practice in Mitchell this week. Team management hopes to build a Greg Corel and Cathy Elliot caps BY CAROLANNE DWG Tarzan and Jane ended up the winners in the fall mixed two ball by shooting a fine 45 for9 holes. Bruce also presented the brand new Club Champion- ship trophy, which he donat- ed., to l'an Doig. Doug Elliott was presented with the Brad Smith -Don Eatori Trophy for the men's match 01 maxed play and Greg Core with the Sills trophy for Junior match play. The golf season is pretty well over as far as organized events go. However if the weather co-operates we should be able to enjoy some great golf. Blue skies along with those golden autumn leaves make a great setting to enjoy this sport. Some- times the greens are a little 'cluttered with leaves but once you clear a path to the hole, you're almost 'certain the ball won't stray too far.
