Fred Eckel of Kitchener were
in Edmonton to attend the
marriage of John and Geral-
dine's son Dan to Jody
Heiman of Spruce Grove,
Alta, The wedding took place
on August 28 in St. Andrews
United Church, Spruce
Grove. Randy Eckel was the
best man and Jeff Mustard of
Red Deer, formerly of Bruce -
field, was groomsman. Rich-
ard McKinley of Lethbridge
also attended. Dan and Jody
will ,be living in Edmonton,
A party -of six fishermen,
Gordon Hill and^Bill Chessell
of Varna. Jerry Uniac of
Bayfield, Carl Kuhl of Kit -
checker, Pete Colyer of Kip -
pen and Doug Rijchie of
Exeter, returned on Saturday
from a week at Mctagama.
The weather was cold and the
water low. but they had
reabenable success. Gordon
caught the biggest fish, a
four -pound pickerel.
LIFE MEMBERS
Margaret Dowson and Dor-
othy Ostrom were honoured
at the September meeting of
Varna U.C.W. with Life
Memberships in recognition
of many years of devoted
service in the U.C.W. and
earlier church groups. Marg-
aret Hayter read the presen-
tation service and Margaret's
daughter-in-law Joyce put
her pin on. Dorothy received
her pin from her sister,
Marjorie Stirling.
Margaret Hayter, assisted
by Doris Wilson, led the
worship with, the thence
"Courage" an , the hymn
"Stand Up, Stand Up for
Jesus". She also read the
poem "If Jesus Came to Your
House", Joan Beierling and
Margaret gave a report on
their day at Alma College,
where 112 registered for the
one day school and 115 for the
three•day session. Highlights
were the excellent music, the
afternoon speaker. Dr. Bruce
od, evening vespers.

meaningful skits presented
by the women in the three-
day school,
President Doris Wilson
chaired the business meet
ing. Reports were read by
secretary Dianne Kirton and
Treasurer Margaret Hayter.
Heler, Taylor read thank you
notes from Ruth Morrison,
Mary Reid 'and Marianne
Kalblleisch. A letter was
received from our former
foster child in Calcutta. tell-
ing of his progress in school
and his prowess on the soccer
field.
A donation will he given to
the Sunday School to pay for
lesson material. Several
members volunteered to
make posters to advertise the
anniversary smorgasbord
September 22. The October
program committee is listing
highlights ofthe U,C.W. over
the years in recognition of its
twentieth anniversary. At the
Regional meeting on Tuesday
October S at Lnndesboro, the
women who were local presi-
dents when the U.C.W. was
inaugurated 20 years ago will
be honoured. Ruby Hill was
president in Varna at that
time.
Sunday School will resume,
this Sunday. It's 'hoped this
will improve attendance at
church, as it hasn't been too
good during the summer
months. Several new teach-
ers are required for Sunday
School. too. so if you'd like to
help in this arca. please let.
Miss Brown or the superin•
tendents know.
A tremendously successful
pig and corn roast was held at
Stanley Township Ball Park
on Sunday for township
residents. It was arranged by
members of the recreation
committee who would like to
thank Bev Hill for donating
one of the pigs. Don Taylor
and Richard Erb for doing an
excellent joh of cooking and
everyone else who helped.
The ladies brought the rest
of the food and it was a great
feast.
There were ball games
between all the township
teams for entertainment. It is
expected to become an
annual event. Big thanks
from township residents to
Sharon Chutcr and Marjorie
Hayter for three years of
untiring work in co-ordinat-
ing the hall schedule and all
the work that accompanies
this position. They are now
