Business booms in Dublin
Warren Bennewies is a young Dublin
man who knows exactly where he's going.
And he's confident enough it's the right
direction that in July he quit his permanent
job at Standard Products in Mitchell to
work full time on his own business.
That business which grew gradually
from a hobby over the past four years is oil
• spraying of vehicles..,everything from
personal cars to fleets of trucks, vans and
huge truck cabs. He operated out of the
garage next to the home he and wife
Heather, daughter Kelly, 4, and son Kyle,
lu months, share in Dublin.
• Then last February he had a specially
designed tandem trailer built that he hauls
behind his pick-up truck and which gives
him lots of flexibility. Warren hauls the
trailer to a farm, say, or to a city where
he'S lined up a day's business. Then he
drives the vehicles to be sprayed up the
trailer ramp, hooks up the gas driven air
compressor that operates the sprayer and
he's in business.
The 25 -year-old man has an ar-
rangement with two Seaforth business-
men, Dave Schenck and Fred Schuch, to
use their lots for his mobile spraying
business. "If someone lives in an
apartment building• or has a paved
driveway, they don't want their vehicles
sprayed right at home," he explains,.
Warren grew up in Mitchell and started
oil spraying vehicles "more or less as a
hubby. I did it for friends. "relatives and
neighbours and word got around.
• "1 do every vehicle as if it were my own,
alwayshave," he says. Dublin Mobile Oil'
Spraying has done more than 1,000
vehicles. People who grew up in the
Dublin. Seaforth, Mitchell area come from
far away to have their cars sprayed by
Warren.
Business continues to increase steadily.
Last winter when Standard Products was
on a four day week,, Warren "went out
Fridays and lined up business." Future
business includes 100 cars to be sprayed
for Purolator Couriers.
A booming business means being
callable seven days a week. "I do
•
siness (vehicles) on Sundays," Warren
explains. He'll also give an estimate over
the phone and says the average oil
spraying job takes an hour to an hour and a
half. "A word of caution ...no matter
where you get yourcarsprayed, a 20
minute job is not enough."
Oil spraying (with new oil, few sprayers
do their work with used oil any more)
prevents rust because it seals the car so
that moisture can't get in, he says. Even
rustproofers, like Ziebart, recommend
annual oil spraying, after a car is
rustproofed, according to Warren.
Body shops too are recommending the
process, which is becoming more popular
as the cost-conscious keep their cars longer
and take better care of them. "It works,"
Warren insists," but you must do it every
. year from the time a car is new till it's five
years old, then twice a year."
A treatment for a car costs about $30 and
it should be done now on an olden car
before winter with its heavily salted roads
and then again in the spring. "Il slows
down rust" says the owner of the area's
only mobile oil spraying business. "and it
eliminates rust that hasn't started yet."
Warren Bennewies, who quit school at
age 16 after a year in Mitchell and a year -at
Northwestern high schools, says his
automotive background (jobs with Kelly's
• Garage in Mitchell and Schneider's Auto
Wrecking in Rostock) taught, him the
rusting out problems in each type of car.
"GMs rust in certain places, Fords rust in
certain places...you get an idea of where
they are going to go, and where they're
not." -
He has one part time employee,
brother-in-law Rob Brown, now, and would
like to have enough business next year
Rob Brown oil sprays a Sills Hardware; vehicle
that he can •concentrate on managing
Dublin Mobile Oil Spraying rather than
doing the spray work himself.
He's keen andit's likely he'll reach his
goal.
"There are people within ten miles of
here that 1 haven't had time to go see yet,"
he sums up.
