Just a few of Elizabeth Brown's 327 pairs of salt
and pepper Shakers.
At 327 pairs
it's timo to stop
BY DARLENE FIEREIRA
She received her first set M1950, a pair of
miniature apples that looked so real a little
boy tried to take a bite and left a permanent
mark. Today, Elizabeth Brown has 327 pairs
of salt and pepper shakers.
The collection began with gifts from
friends and relatives who would bring a set
as a souvenir from their travels. Eventually,
however, Mrs. Brown started buying her
own and added to her collection.
In addition to the usual shapes and sizes
of salt and pepper shakers, Mrs. Brown's
,collection consists of all sorts of animals.
including snakes, seals. frogs, and fish. She
also has a variety of fruits and vegetables,
from corn on the cob, asparagus, and
turnips, to strawberries, and lemons.
There are also sets of eggs, cactis.
kettles, kissing cousins, Maggie and Jiggs.
barrels, totem poles, Indians, hamburgers,
hot rings. not belly stoves, an ironing board
with irons, sewing machine, toaster,
lawnmower, gasoline pumps, washing
machine, champagne bottles in bucket,
,umbrellas, pair of feet, hot plate, light
bulbs, tricycle, outdoor toilets, golf balls,
garbage cans, tomb stones, books, ballerin-
as and malt bags, just M name a few.
Mrs. Brown has one set that is more than
100 years old and another Set still with salt
and pepper that her husband had in his
lunch pail before he died.,
The shakers come in different forms and
textures. They are made of wood, ceramics,
claY, tin, bone. plastic. ebony, crystal, and
glass.
Mrs. Brown had a cabinet especially
made for her collection and she proudly
displays it in her apartment. But, although
there is room in the cabinet for more
shakers. she thinks she has enough.
"I don't intend•to buy anymore unless
-Seesorreething really outstanding. There's a
lot 01 money flea up M there."
