During the efficial presen- tation Shirly commented that she was pleased with her game and happy to have played so well to defend tie title. She also commented on the floe condition of the course and said she had • selected the Seaforth tour- nament as the one to plan her Canadian vacation around. We look forward to seeing her again next year. In second place was well known area golfer Kay Sharp from Clinton who plays out of Bluewater in Bayfield. Kay shot an 18 hole total of 83. In all there were 70 ladies competing in the 4th annual Ladies Invitation. There were 4 flights including a special 9 hole flight. After golfing in the blazing sun the ladies enjoyed a smorgasbord din- ner before the prizes were presented. Longest drive and a pot of mums went to Shirly Lark who cracked a good one to edge out Mitchell's Mary Layton. Mary Longstaff of Seaforth had no problem winning A pot of mums when her tee shot on 5 came up only inches from the hole to give her closest to the pin. Our sWingingest gal was Corrie Snowden. and the girls who had least number of qmtts were Jessica Shane from St. Marys and Elsie Walker from Stratford. Irene Uniac Mitchell won the door prize. On Tuesday the juniors bussed down to Glen Abbey to the practice round of the Canadian Open. It was Junior Day at the open and the pros put on a. special clinic for the kids. This is the first time the championship has come to Ontario in five years and the first time it's ever, been held at Hully Gully. Over 500 young athletes, from across Canada are ex- pected to compete in this C.M.A. sanctioned classic. sponsored by Suzuki Canada. Randy Collins. proprietor of Hully Gully, near Varna. says his staff has been preparing for the event for the past week. He expects over 5.000 spectators at the race. Qualifying heats run od Saturday. July 31 and finals go on Sunday August 1. Racing begins at noon on both days. Class leaders from every province include: 80 rider John Snow of Langley. B.C.; junior hot shoe David La- jeunesse of Red Deer Alber- ta: 80 ace Victor Stynlky of North Battleford. Saskitche- wan and Quebec contender Miguel Duhamel of Lasalle. plus many more. Ontario contenders include 1981 "100" Champion at Calgary. Sean Van Dongen of Clinton and ninth place fin. isher in 80 class at Calgary, Randy Marriage. Randy and Sean, life-long school mates, will be squaring off in the 125 Junior Championship. Other local entries include Darryl Simpson of Exeter, Brad Weber of Atwood and Rob McIntosh of Brussels. During the past week sand has been dumped at various locations of the track and a chisel plow breaking up the track to create a six inch mulch. He said water is added using an underground and above ground irrigation system to create the perfect track. Byron Sawers of British Columbia said he will be racing with a broken foot. The fracture occurred during practice over a week ago. For him. motocross means "hav- ing my own shop and winning super cross." He said the sport "isn't dangerous. but fun.• Roxanne Carney who ac- g 3 companied her husband Jack and four western riders from Alberta and B.C. said, "it's dangerous". "We spent six days on the road ' to compete at Hully Gully." Mr. Carney says. "We have a good Alberta contingent entered." He said the boys in his group are all Kawasaki riders. Some of the riders at -e supplied with free motocross bikes and required equipment. He explained "the boys make their own repairs and each bike is Completely serv- iced after each moto." Mr. Collins said motocross is much deeper "than a nervy sport. A rider has much to think of and requires good concentration."
