The Huron Expositor, 1982-07-21, Page 2911 Special constable gets few complaints BY DARLENE FEREIRA Local residents .might have noticed an extra police officer strolling Main Street recently. Although this , person has, been orking at the local police office since Decembei • it w ;isn't until Mareh that she took. on a bigger job: Pam Soontiens began working .at the pollee station in the first week of December. I Yhl as a part.tinie secretary, but in March she was sworn: inas a special constable. The prileedure 'for her additional duties included a trip to Coderich to be sworn in by a judge. She had to put her hand on a Bible 1111(1 Nike an oath similar to gun of a regular . constitble She also received an official uniform. Although Mrs. Soontiens still does her secretarial work, she can now also legally Ow tickets, serve summons and subpoe- nas, and serse as a., pollee matronwhiCh meads that she can search a female. ' I he basic difference between a special konstahle and a regular constable is that a special constable does not have police training, does not carry a fire arm nor a police radio. does not go in the cruisstr, and of course. does not get a police officer's salary. Mrs. Soontiens did not have 10 go through any special training for her new duties because she learned a lot of the basics from her secretarial position. "I understand the basics of the law. It's something you pick up as you go along,'" • says Mrs, Soontiens. Having a' uniform has given Mrs. Soontiens more recognition but she doesn't really mind. She is even getting accustomed to her children's teasing. "Before I got the clothes, people didn't know I was coming. But the uniform is good • I feel like I belong and people recognii.e me arid come to me with questions." She also enjoys the variety of her work and the opportunity to get out of the office. "I go out there just for a break. It's a change and I meet the people." Mrs. Soontiens has not had any problems with her new job and being a female special constable has only meant that children talk to her _mom she says. "I find they're pretty good people and Special Constable Pant Soontiens -.91r very few complain. When I see the meter has gone but the people are leaving. I don't ticket them. You have to be fair." Seaforth"s special 6onstable works three days a weck but she won't divulge which days so people won't know, when to Watch out for her. Anyway: as long as there's a dime in the meter. Mrs. Soontiens ' will continue her stroll.L. 0 ( • FRESH2 NOT FROZEN HICKEN LEGS 5 BURNS OKED PICNICS PART BACK ON ze rs fine maricets„, of fine foods DELICATESSEN PRIDE Of CANADA SANDWICH STYLE 85.05/55 COOKED HAM sucEo- 1129 ob PRIDE Of CANADA -SMOKED 0115I5 COOKED VINTAGE HAM SLICED '3.00 lb SHOPSYS PREPARED e3,70 /kg POTATO • EGG SALAD '1.68 lb• '8.80/kg REGULAR SPRITE OR COCA-COLA CASE 00 24 • 10 OZ TINS *117 • C ASE ISLICED- 5 VARIETIES ZEHRS OWN COOKED MEATS 2.16/kg Ib.
