THE HURON EXPOSITOR, JULY 21, 1982 Family hears historian The annual reunion of the Smillie -Elder clan was held under sunny skies on Sat. July 10 at Seaforth Lions Park, with an attendance of close to 100. The swimming pool was well patronized and the little tots thoroughly enjoyed the wading pool. There was a luncheon at noon for those arriving at eleven o'clock for an executive meet- ing. As the crowd grew and signed the register. there were impressive 'greetings and reminiscing all around. Several new arrivals were proudly introduced andwere very much admired by cou- sins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. At four o'clock Fred and Susan Elder enthusiastically took charge of a program of sports for the young set. Prizes were awarded. The historian, Lorne Elder of Chatham, had carefully prepared, and displayed on a long table in the pavilion a copy of the family tree, which created much interest, curi- osity and admiration for a job well done. A buffet supper, with Elva Peck as social convener proved so scrumptious and popular that the tables soon took on a different appear- ance. President Jim Statham and secretary John Elder. had charge of the business. A special feature was the fif- tieth wedding anniversary cake cutting ceremony of Helen and Fred Howe, who with their daughter Betty Brooks of Las Cruces and son Dr. Bill of Niagara Falls, shared the honors. It was decided to, hold the 1983 reunion at the same location. Members attending the reunion came from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Tuscon Arizona, Gros Point Michi- gan, Kingsville, Ottawa. Belleville, Seaforth, Water - down, St. Thomas. Mitchell, Guelph. Strathroy, Varna. London. Zurich, Blyth, Kip - pen, Exeter. Fort Erie. Hen - sail and Iduronview. Many of the , clan were entertained, the day after the reunion, at the farm home of Jack and Lorraine, Sandy and Jeffrey Peck, west of Kippen.
