Al2 — THE HURON EXF;OSITOR. JULY 21, 1982 TEAM SWEATERS were presented to the Winthrop- Mites recently by team sponsor, Marlen Vincent of Vincent's Farm Equipment, Seaforth. The team has 13 players aged 00 and under. Above photo, back row from the left is I is 1 ies On dt@ geo@no by CciesoOmn® IDd© It's women's week on the golf courses throughout North America. This week has been designated Women Golfer's Week, and the focus IS on the ladies of the links. On golf courses all over the place women are enjoying the game that Mary Queen of Scots made so .popular,hun- dreds of years ago. ‘. Yes. Mary really started something but it was the men who first realized the poten- tial of the sport. Before long it was a man's sport and for years men dominated all aspects of the game. Courses and clubhouses for men only. tournaments and competi- tions for men only. Then a strange thing hap- pened. Women woke up and noticed that golf was a game they could enjoy equally. Now this didn't happen over night of course. Other things had to happen first. An abundance of leisure time developed when the days of automatic washers, dryers. and food processors came upon us. No longer did women have to spend all day on these menial tasks. Then came the days of economic success when every household not only had time to spare but money to spare too. After all golf was tradi- tionally a rich man's sport. why not a rich woman's? With the advent of ' 'women's lib- certain golf establish- ments had to readjust their ,ninking as well as their lockerroom lay outs: Women were going to golf just As they were going to become doc- tors. lawyers, and ministers. Move over fellas! It was a small beginning and sometimes a rocky road. Often women would hear Derek Gridzak, Don McKercher, coach, Bruce Whitmore, coach; Mr. Vincent, Leo Greidanus, coach and Steve Greidanus. Front row: Jason McNichol, John McKercher, Brent Whitmore and Paul Dolmage. (Wassink pho,to) comments from irate men about women and slow play, high scores and so on. How- ever they persevered and have now come -into their.own in the golfing world. With the increase in num- bers of public and semi -pri- vate courses a woman need not be rich to enjoy the pleasures of the game. It is a game she can participate in with the family, her friends, or on her own. Any time of the day is the perfect time to play golf so working women, or those with tots in nursery school can both golf. Though there have been women golf- ers for many years. it's only recently that women's golf has really boomed. , The skyrocketing numbers of golfing gals have made people in the golf business sit up and take notice. Equip- ment manufacturers are mak- ing super clubs for the ladies and are taking note of the skill which many of the women have developed. The equip- ment is geared to the women's strength and build. No longer are lady's clubs just a pink or powder blue version of the men's. The clubs are generally shorter, lighter and more flexible in the shaft to counteract the difference in strength and size between the sexes. Golf- ing apparel for women is a veritable gold mine for manu- facturers with styles and colours that make a ladies' day on the links look like a field of moving flowers. Women are lapping up the attention they're receiving and not just in the marketing area. Women are developing golfing skills and know-how. They not only speak the wee language, but have been seen to belt that little%Orli ball down the middle or s nk a tough 40 footer. Beginning women have on advantage over men. They don't expect too much too soon, and they're not too proud to get a 1esson or some professional advice. As a result they develop fewer bad habits and enjoy the game more as a fun pastime. Men often criticize women as being slow, but generally women, though they don't hit the ball as long, stay out of trouble in hazards, and take 'less time lining up and taking practice swings. Though they may hit the ball more often, they are just as fast as the men. With increased media coverage of the L.P.G.A., golfers of both sexes can see what the great lady golfers can do on the tour. There arc many amateur competitions for women all over as well as more and more mixed couple events. Locally our women are reaping the benefits of golf. Suntanned golfers are taking in fresh air and exercise more than ever before. Each Mon- day night they get together to enjoy the social side of golf. There are competitions each week at other courses in which several local ladies take part. This week our 4th Annual Ladies Invitation is on with over 70 ladies competing. Defending champion Shirly Lark. now residing in Mentor. Ohio. has made the trip up for the day. Were all set for a great golfing day and lots- of fun. Just a few short years ago there was rarely a woman golfer at the local course, but now...well just the other day a fellow had to rent clubs because his wife was away golfing with his. Another guy had to borrow my putter for 9 holes because his better half was practising putting in the living room. 1 love it. Winners on Monday night at ladies' night in the 2 woman best ball were C.A. Doig and Barb Watt. Men's night winners were Kevin Bennett. Pete Jansen, Ken Doig Jr. and Rob Core who fired a sizzling 31. olfers enjoy steak barbecue of news seem to have reached rock bottom.
