Jim Dalrym- ple of Egn)ondville is in the midst of restoring a log house. Well known as a restorer of antique and classic cars, Jim decided to try his hand at rebuilding a house that has some character." The history of the log house goeS back over 100 years. Glancing through the Toronto Star, .1 in), noticed an adver- tisement for a log house for sale. six miles north of Guelph. He contacted the owner. Tony Vyn. a professor at the University of Guelph and after looking it over, made his purchase. Built during the 1830s or 40s, the house was inhabited UI) until ten years ago. The balance of the house will be divided into a bathroom, study or third bedroom on the main floor and two bedrooms on the second storey. The house roof will be covered in cedar ?hakes to give it ati authentic old look. Prices range from $2.000 to $8,000 for a dilapidated log houSe. Jim said. The price depends on condition. He said he has never priced a fully restored log house and did not wish to reveal the value he wodld place on his house when it's completed. The exterior logs • will be chinked (spaces between the logs) using a cement and sand mix. "Cement is stronger," explained Jim, than convent- ional chinking material. The space between the logs is insulated with fibreglass. He siad the "R''' value of the logs alone is approximately eight to ten. PINE FLOORING Three rooms will be finish- ed with the logs exposed inside. the house., Other rooms will be strapped and drywalled. Jim said he sal- vaged enough pine flooring to be installed on the second floor. New material may have to.be used at ground level. he admitted. New staircase? you ask. No way. says Jim.
