Getting the best with windbreaks
Laura Broadley
Clinton News Record
A small crowd came out
to learn about windbreaks
and how it can benefit
farmers.
The Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority put on
a windbreak demonstration
last Thursday.
Windbreaks reduce soil
erosion, improve soil mois-
ture, reduce building heat-
ing/cooling costs, create a
wildlife habitat and
increase odour control
around farm buildings
among other things,
according to the MVCA.
Paul VanderMolen, of
Lawn Master Landscaping,
said that every property is
different and every land-
owner wants something
different from the
windbreak.
VanderMolen said that
maintenance is extremely
important and that there are
far too many windbreaks
that aren't maintained.
Maintenance is key to get-
ting the most out of the
windbreaks. It will improve
the health of the trees, lower
disease and insect damage,
reduce snow accumulation,
aid in crop protection and
improve crop yields, accord-
ing to the MVCA.
Thinning trees, removing
dead or diseased trees,
replanting gaps and prun-
ing the bottom to allow for
more even distribution of
wind and snow are all
maintenance methods.
There are grants and
other programs available to
interested landowners. For
more information contact
the MVCA at trees@mvca.
