Clinton News Record, 2015-07-29, Page 1212 News Record • Wednesday, July 29, 2015 2015 Summer Company participants are open for business With summer jobs for youth increasingly difficult to find, ten young entrepreneurs from Huron County between the ages of 15 to 29, have taken matters into their own hands and are operating their own businesses this season. The students will receive financial assistance from the Summer Com- pany, a provincial youth -entrepre- neurship program funded by the Ministry of Economic Develop- ment, Employment and Infrastructure. Kurtis Bartliff is running hockey camps in both Goderich and Clinton this summer. Most hockey camps run daily for a week or two, but his business Beyond the Trail will fea- ture 8 week camps, working towards gaining skills, and preparing the campers for the winter season with overall fitness training as well. Her business is called Maple Lane Whole Foods. Erica Hemingway named, Erica's Exquisite Ice Cream Trike, will con- sist of selling packaged frozen treats from a tricycle in the Listowel area. She will attend parks, pools, sporting events, fairs and will be available for parties. Abigail Lacroix's business, Lac- roix Design, will be an illustration and design business, specializing in greeting cards. Her initial plan was to sell online only, but she has agreed to attend and large local Arts and Crafts festival, as well as selling her products in a local co-operative. Sierra Moores will be running a business providing private swim lessons in the Wingham area. Her business is named Swimming For Life. Mack O'Keefe is operating a business called Stand Up Paddle Boarding, and he will be renting stand-up paddle boards at the beach in Goderich. Currently in its 15th year, the Summer Company program aims to inspire more young people to choose entrepreneurship as a career and to equip them with the tools they need to succeed. The ministry is granting over 850 Summer Company awards this year and we're pleased that Huron County won six of them, reported Alison Lobb, business consultant at the Huron Business Enterprise Centre in Seaforth. All three participated in the Summer Company, a youth -entrepreneurship program. requirements, the student is eligi- ble for an additional award of up to $1,500. Each student submitted a com- prehensive business plan with their application in May and partici- pated in an interview process. Training and mentorship is pro- vided during the summer by a vol- unteer group of community men- tors, along with training and workshops by Alison Lobb pro- gram manager and business con- sultant at the Small Business Enter- prise Centre, County of Huron. This year's mentors include Will Lobb of Atherton Painting & Reno- vations; Phil Maier of Phil Maier Consulting; Debbie Moran of Libro Credit Union; Kathy Nichol of the spa, Solace on Turnberry; Kim Postma of the Farmhouse Inn Clin- ton; and Donna Taylor, Summer Company assistant. These individ- uals will be communicating with the young entrepreneurs on a regu- lar basis during the summer, assist- ing with the management side of operating a business.
