ways to remain safe.
The day was planned for
children ages seven to 12 to
learn about farm and recrea-
tional safety with hands-on
interactive learning on a
variety of safety topics,
including bicycle, animal,
chemical, fire, ATV and grain
safety.
A recent OPP release
revealed that 165 people
have died as a result of off-
road vehicle accidents over
the last 10 years in Ontario. A
linked factor in 74 of those
deaths was people not wear-
ing a helmet.
Bruce Murphy grew up on
a farm and knows how
tempting it is to just jump on
an ATV and "just go': On July
7 he taught children the
basic points of ATV safety,
including riding and proper
equipment like a helmet and
goggles.
"You've only got one
brain, you've got to protect
it;' he said.
Three years ago, three
mothers decided that safety
was something children
needed to learn and grasp as
soon as possible. The prob-
lem is especially relevant to
children in this area where
many either live on farms or
visit a farm on a regular
basis.
Susanne Claussen had
taken her children to another
Progressive Agriculture safety
day and brought back the idea
to host one in Varna. She said
she saw the difference it made
so she proposed it to two
other mothers, Brenda Chuter
and Joan Ryan.
Claussen said there has
been a huge support from
the community and
sponsors. The municipality
donated the building for the
day and all the instructors
were volunteers. All the chil-
dren were able to go home
with a bicycle helmet
because of the donations
they received.
"If we can save one chil-
dren from a severe accident
then it's worth it,” said
Claussen.
The kids learned not to go in a grain bin when it's full through a
model and demonstration at the grain safety station.

Huron County EMS was at the Stanley Community
Complex on July 7 teaching kids about first-aid.
