Years on fast -paced, high -stress
Bay Street in Toronto left Kirsten
Harrettwanting a quieter and more
peaceful life on Ontario's west coast.
Originally from Clinton, Harrett
wanted to find a way to come back
home and she found thatwhen she
took over Deer Park Lodge 15 years
ago.
Harrett has had her eye on The
Ashwood Inn propertyforyears and
brought her goal one step further
earlier this year when she became
the owner.
"There's a huge demand for
accommodation around here" Har-
rett explained. "It was a natural
growth for Deer Park Lodge:'
After four months of renovations
and over a month into its opening,
Harrett said things are going well
and the community has been
accepting and grateful for the
changes made.
'We've had a really great start and
a lot of support;' Harrett said.
Both properties have become
one with guests having access to
amenities at either location. There is
access to a private beach, outdoor
and indoor saltwater swimming
pools, trails and a full-service
restaurant
Rob MacFie has done most of the
renovations himself including new
flooring, carpeting, vanities, beds,
fixtures, and the creation of the Ash -
wood Restaurant and Bourbon Bar.
The emerald ash borer destroyed
many of the Ashwood trees on the
Deer Park Lodge land so Harrett
decided to repurpose the wood into
new furnishings.
After joining forces with Pete
Meades, Harrett soon came to real-
ize that the newirm could be host to
a premier live music. Music is
something the local population
could enjoy alongside visitors, she

said.
"It became obvious that it would
be a really great place to have awell-
developed music destination for
Huron County," Harrett said.
Meades is co-owner of Meades
Bros. Productions and has nm the
Bayfield concert series. He focuses
on Canadian musicians because he
knows that it can be tough for new
artists. The country's music industry
is fraught with obstacles, he
explained.
As a part of the renovations a
stage was built and new sound
equipment was brought into attract
an array of artists.
Meades also came up with the
idea of the bourbon bar as a unique
concept for the area. The bar boasts
25 different varieties with differing
alcohol levels for every bourbon
drinker.
Meades said a good introduction
to bourbon for beginners is to try an
item from the custom cocktail
menu. The Ashwood Arnold
Palmer is a specialty of the bar with
a mint infused twist on the classic
drink.

fessor RobertWhyte, CCC. The Ash -

The Ashwood is expanding and
is able host corporate functions
with a meeting space that can
hold 150 people. Audio-visual
equipment and access to on and
off-site adventures gives a focus to
team building.
It is also a great place to host
weddings with rooms to accom-
modate guests and close access to
all of Bayfield.
The Ashwood Inn is able to
book corporate events and wed-
dings throughout the year in
hopes of bringing people to the
area during the winter months.
