On June 27 staff, family, friends and customers cele- brated its 80th anniversary. It all started just across town on Princess Street in 1935. Then constable Arthur Groves decided to sell refrigerators, stoves and washers from his home to make some extra money. The business continued to grow and eventually moved into a store across town where radios were added to the inventory. Clayton joined his father as partner in 1962 but he had been helping at the store since he was in grade five. Shortly after the partnership became Laura Broadley Clinton News Record Family and staff gather inside Groves TV & Appliance Centre to celebrate the 80th anniversary. Groves TV was the first to sell televisions in Clinton and it had a big impact on the community. Clayton remembers getting some heat from local law enforcement when crowds would gather at the store- front to watch wrestling. People would come from all over the area to watch the only television some of them had access to, remembers Clayton. Arthur installed the first antenna television and Groves TV has had many firsts in Clinton since then. It sold the first coloured televi- sion, the first satellite dish in 1983 and the first 40 -inch television in 1985. After Arthur retired, Clay- ton's wife Jane quit her teaching job and joined him at the store in 1975. In 1996, Clayton and Jane's son, Dan, joined the team. Since 2010 Dan has been the owner and operator of the store. He's seen a lot of changes over the last 14 years and in 2013 moved Groves TV to its current location. Groves TV still boasts a large variety of appliances including, refrigerators, cooking, freezers, ventilation, laundry, dishwashers, gar- bage disposal and home com- fort. In addition to appliances it also offers cabinets, flooring, wall systems, tool storage and work surfaces. A division of Groves TV is Sleep Matters with a selec- tion of mattresses, pillows and bases. In addition to its product Groves TV offers home audio and pre -wiring installations, delivery and set-up, built-in appliances, audio/visual cables and accessories, sales and services to major appli- ances and electronics, appli- ance parts and central vac installations and supplies. Three generations, four locations and several expan- sions later, a lot has changed for Groves TV over the last 80 years but it still remains a fam- ily business staple in Clinton.
