Groves TV & Appliance
Centre is a family owned and
operated business at 272
Huron Street in Clinton.
On June 27 staff, family,
friends and customers cele-
brated its 80th anniversary.
It all started just across town
on Princess Street in 1935. Then
constable Arthur Groves
decided to sell refrigerators,
stoves and washers from his
home to make some extra
money.
The business continued to
grow and eventually moved
into a store across town
where radios were added to
the inventory.
Clayton joined his father as
partner in 1962 but he had
been helping at the store since
he was in grade five. Shortly
after the partnership became

official the business was
moved to 10 Huron Street.
Groves TV was the first to
sell televisions in Clinton
and it had a big impact on
the community. Clayton
remembers getting some
heat from local law
enforcement when crowds
would gather at the store-
front to watch wrestling.
People would come from
all over the area to watch
the only television some of
them had access to,
remembers Clayton.
Arthur installed the first
antenna television and
Groves TV has had many
firsts in Clinton since then. It
sold the first coloured televi-
sion, the first satellite dish in
1983 and the first 40 -inch
television in 1985.
After Arthur retired, Clay-
ton's wife Jane quit her
teaching job and joined him
at the store in 1975.
In 1996, Clayton and Jane's
son, Dan, joined the team.
Since 2010 Dan has been the
owner and operator of the
store. He's seen a lot of
changes over the last 14 years
and in 2013 moved Groves TV
to its current location.
Groves TV still boasts a
large variety of appliances
including, refrigerators,
cooking, freezers, ventilation,
laundry, dishwashers, gar-
bage disposal and home com-
fort. In addition to appliances
it also offers cabinets, flooring,
wall systems, tool storage and
work surfaces.
A division of Groves TV is
Sleep Matters with a selec-
tion of mattresses, pillows
and bases.
In addition to its product
Groves TV offers home audio
and pre -wiring installations,
delivery and set-up, built-in
appliances, audio/visual
cables and accessories, sales
and services to major appli-
ances and electronics, appli-
ance parts and central vac
installations and supplies.
Three generations, four
locations and several expan-
sions later, a lot has changed
for Groves TV over the last 80
years but it still remains a fam-
ily business staple in Clinton.

The Clinton Optimist Club
and the Clinton Legion are
hosting a motorcycle charity
poker rally for the benefit of
Childcan on July 11.
Childcan is a charity based
out of London that supports
children and their families
who have gone through
childhood cancer.
When a child is diagnosed
Childcan meets with the
families to discuss possible
ways to help, including gift
cards for incidentals, long
distance phone cards, gas
cards and video rental cards
so the children can keep
their minds off treatment.
Childcan also supports
families through its pro-
gramming and services,
including: parking program,
family meal vouchers, family
assistance program, support
groups, family fun days,
super star awards, holiday
meals, post -secondary bur-
saries, funding for families
who lose a child and
research projects.
Simon Vandriel said that as
a committee the Optimists
wanted to give money to a
childhood cancer charity but
with a focus on the families,
which is why they chose
Childcan.

best connection to our inter-
ests," said Vandriel.
This is the first time the
Clinton Optimists have held
a motorcycle charity poker
rally but it hopes to make it
an annual event.
The joint venture between
the Optimists and the Clin-
ton Legion is a day -long
event starting at 8 a.m. with a
biker breakfast.
At 9 a.m. there will be a bike
show & shine, which will fea-
ture the most original bike,
cleanest bike, dirtiest bike and
the bike most likely to get a
ticket - to add some fun said
Vandriel. Also starting at that
time is a 50/50 draw and silent
auction.
The poker rally will be
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. fol-
lowed by a steak barbeque
for $15.
It costs $30 per rider with
one poker hand and $45 for
a rider and passenger with
two poker hands.
There will be $200 for the
best poker hand and the first
100 riders will receive a grem-
lin bell, which fights the
demons of the road said
Vandriel.
The riders will travel 200 kil-
ometres through Clinton,
Neustadt, Kincardine, Goder-
ich, Bayfield and back to
Clinton.
Vandriel said the two
archways created by the
Central Huron Secondary
School and St. Anne's Catho-
lic School woodworking
classes are impressive.
All events take place at the
Clinton Legion at 95 Kirk Street.
