For some people maintain-
ing a proper budget either
isn't thought of or, for various
reasons, is very difficult. The
people at Rural Response for
Healthy Children (RRHC), a
parent support agencylocated
in Clinton whose primary
focus is child abuse preven-
tion recognize this and, for
this reason, they have intro-
duced a new program called
Budget Buddies.
What is Budget Buddies? It
is a program that seeks to pro-
vide free and confidential,
one-on-one, practical, skills -
based and hands-on financial
and household management
to support families and indi-
viduals within Huron County.
In short, it seeks to develop a
budget thatworks for people's
unique needs.
As the financial literacy
program coordinator at
RRHC, Pam Hanington,
describes, Budget Buddies is
especially helpful for five
groups of people, namely,
"people living on the edge of
serious debt, single parents,
new, blended families, those
who are on disability as well
as young couples with small
children who wish to move
from renting a house to own-
ing a house' All of these peo-
ple are at particular risk, says
Hanington. "Many of these
people," she says, "need a
budget or they will end up
homeless."
Hanington also wants to
emphasize that the Budget
Buddies program at RRHC is
ultimately founded upon social
justice principles. "Things
should be fair and equal," she
states, "however, because they
are not, we want to know, what
can we do to help?"
Right now Budget Buddies is
the only program of its kind in
Huron County but Hanington
hopes that one day the program
will be developed in other parts
of the area.
The Budget Buddies pro-
gram is currently being exer-
cised as a pilot project and is
funded by a grant from the
Ontario Trillium Foundation,
an agency of the Government
of Ontario and Canada's largest
granting foundation.
RRHC also wants to stress
that it's always seeking individ-
uals who wish to volunteer in
the program as a "budget
buddy," namely, a budget
coach who volunteers their
lime and works with individu-
als and families to assist with
budgeting, creative savings and
banking and credit basics.
Organizers ask anyone who is
interested in volunteering to
contact RRHC at 519-482-8777
ext 203 or info@rncc.on.ca and
point out that volunteer train-
ing sessions are available and
ongoing.
