Tara Ostner The Clinton News Record The bylaw to appoint a full time fire chief, inspector and chief emergency management coordinator (CEMC) for the Municipality of Cen- tral Huron was passed at the January 19 council meeting and the new chief officially com- menced his duties this past Monday. As the chief adminis- trative officer, Peggy Van Mierlo-West described, due to the added work that has been placed on the fire chief, "council realized that a change was necessary" adding that now was a good time to make that change. All of the councillors voted for the passing of the bylaw except for Coun. Alex Westerhout. According to Westerhout, Central Huron is "not a big enough municipality to justify the cost of a full-time chief." "Other options should have been explored," he said. The idea of a full-time fire chief was also opposed by former coun- cillor, Brian Barnim, who attended the January 19 council meeting and voiced his concerns dur- ing the public comment period. Barnim called the deci- sion to appoint a full- time fire chief "prema- ture, expressed his displeasure over the fact that the Municipality of Central Huron bought a new vehicle for the fire chief (as opposed to attaining a used one) and reminded council of what occurred when North Huron hired a full- time fire chief roughly five years ago. "The cost of this," he stated, "esca- lated to being almost unaffordable." Westerhout and Barnim know what a cru- cial role the fire chief has and are not against the fire department. Instead, they merely disagree with council's belief that a full-time fire chief is necessary, that is, as opposed to a part-time one. As Barnim says, "the Municipality of Central Huron will be the only municipality in Huron County to have a full- time fire chief with just one fire hall," a situation which, he believes, will be, in the end, more costly than anything else.
