Clinton News Record, 2015-02-25, Page 22 News Record • Wednesday, February 25, 2015 A cultural mix at Clinton Public School Dave Flaherty QMI Agency/For the News Record Clinton Public School (CPS) has become some- what of a cultural mosaic in the last few weeks. The school has been host to 10 students and one teacher from a Mexi- can private school, Liceo del Valle de Toluca. The students arrived on Feb. 15 and have been staying with local children and their families. The program is facili- tated by Red Leaf Student Programs in partnership with the Avon Maitland District School Board. Gabriela Parejo, the local coordinator for Red Leaf, said international students come to local public schools for "mini - stays", which are usually about three weeks in length. The Mexican pupils were paired students from CPS based on shared likes and interests. During their stay, the students have visited the CN Tower in Toronto and are scheduled to go to Niagara Falls as well. The group gathered for a photo after the school's Peace Tree ceremony held on Friday. and taken part in all the same activities as local kids do. "They are here to immerse themselves in the culture," Knechtel said. CPS students have been very welcoming of their visitors. "There is a buzz in the air," Knechtel said. This past Friday, the school held its annual Peace Tree ceremony. All the classes at CPS created items to be placed on the school's Peace Tree. This year the focus was on students learning about their family heritage. All the classes put their own personal spins on the project. During the ceremony, all the visiting students spoke about themselves and showed pictures of their families to CPS staff and students. Hortensia Valdes is a teacher at Liceo del Valle de Toluca. "They have all been received very warmly by the families," she said. Valdes said she believes the students have inte- grated themselves very well into the local culture and are learning some- thing new about Canada everyday. This is Valdes' third visit to Canada and she expects the students to speak very highly about their time at CPS when they return. The students will depart Canada on March 7.
