Huron FC offers
coaches training and
academy level training
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
If you enjoy soccer but
prefer to play sports indoors
then the game of futsal
might be the perfect sport for
you. What is better is that a
futsal team, called Huron
Football Club, exists right
here in Clinton. The local
football club, which is part of
the London Canadian Futsal
League, trains with players
from Goderich, Seaforth,
Blyth and Brussels.
Also, coming up on March
3 and 10 Bento Vieira, an
internationally ranked soc-
cer coach, will be offering
coaches training at the
YMCA in Goderich and on
Saturdays from April until
July he will be offering acad-
emy level training to ages U6
to U14.
As Annie Sparling, the
general manager for Huron
FC, points out, we would not
have had the unique oppor-
tunity to have Vieira here in
our community if it was not
for Huron FC's head coach,
Poncho Melo, a resident of
Clinton and business owner
in Goderich who played soc-
cer professionally in Mexico.
"This training will be great
for soccer players in Huron
County of all ages who are
really serious about develop-
ing as a player," states
Sparling.
The sport of futsal, which
originated in Brazil, is a form
of soccer (not football) that
is most commonly played in
Europe and South America.
The game is a match
between two teams of five
players (four players who
rotate positions and a goalie)
where the main objective is
to move the ball within the
lines of the gym without the
use of walls to score on a 6
foot by 9 foot net.
Also, in the game of futsal
the ball is smaller and heav-
ier than the ball that is used
in outdoor soccer and the
rules of each sport differ as
well. The different ball, rules
and playing surface used in
futsal create a need for care-
ful improvisation, creativity
and technique that is espe-
cially unique to the sport.
As Sparling states, "the
sport is fun, it develops the
player for the outdoor game
and it's another option for
kids looking for a way to stay
active in the winter months."
She also notes that it is an
inexpensive sport. "All you
need," she says, "is a gym, a
few nets, balls and a coach."
