Public invited to drinking water source protection open houses
Free open houses in Clinton and
Wingham provide chance to find
out more about new local plans
New plans have been
created to reduce risk to
municipal drinking water
sources and the public is
invited to find out more.
The Ausable Bayfield
Maitland Valley Source
Protection Region is hold-
ing two free public open
houses so the public can
learn about newly
approved source protec-

"Source protection
plans take effect on April
1, 2015," said Jenna Allain,
Program Supervisor with
the Ausable Bayfield Mait-
land Valley Source Protec-
tion Region. "We are host-
ing an open house in
February and an open
house in March so people
can learn about how the
source protection plans
are adding protection to
municipal sources of
drinking water and to find
out if plans will impact
them."
The two open houses
run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
and people are welcome
to drop in to either event
at any time during those
hours. The first open
house takes place on
Thursday, February 26,
2015 at the Regional
Equine and Agricultural
Centre of Huron (REACH)
Centre, 169 Beech Street,
Clinton. The second open
house takes place on
Wednesday, March 25,
2015 at the North Huron
Wescast Community Com-

posted plan approval on
the Environmental Bill of
Rights (EBR) Registry on
January 22, 2015. The
plans take effect on April
1, 2015. The MOECC also

for the Maitland Valley
and Ausable Bayfield
source protection areas,
provide policies to reduce
risk to municipal drinking
water sources. There are
21 land -use activities that
may, in certain areas and
certain circumstances
(such as quantities and
locations), pose a threat to
drinking water. Those
activities include septic
systems, home heating oil,
pesticide use, fertilizer
and manure and chemical
storage, among others.
Source protection plan
policies address activities
in four types of vulnerable
areas: wellhead protection
areas (groundwater)
around municipal wells;
surface water intake pro-
tection zones; significant
groundwater recharge
areas; and highly vulnera-
ble aquifers. People may
find the maps of these areas
by visiting www.sourcewa-
terinfo.on.ca. Threat activi-
ties may be low, moderate
or significant. In this
region, significant threats
to drinking water are only
found in wellhead protec-
tion areas (WHPAs). The
policies in those relatively
small vulnerable areas
reduce risk by using tools
ranging from education
and outreach, to risk man-
agement plans, to restricted
land uses, to prohibition of
some activities.
People in the region can
also protect water through
positive actions in highly
vulnerable aquifers
(HVAs), significant
groundwater recharge
areas (SGRAs), and intake
protection zones (IPZs).
Plan policies for those
areas include education
and outreach. Landown-
ers are not required to
comply with policies in
those areas but the com-
mittee hopes people will
have regard for the plans'
policies for moderate and
low threats and voluntar-
ily consider what positive
actions they can take to
protect local water.
