YMCA ready to assist Syrian refugees
Special to
Clinton News Record
The YMCA is here to offer
settlement assistance and
support as Ontario wel-
comes Syrian refugees to our
province. Although the
majority of government
sponsored Syrian refugees
will be received in Toronto,
Ottawa, Hamilton, Windsor,
London and Kitchener -
Waterloo, once here, they
may choose a secondary set-
tlement location and may
choose to reside in any
Ontario city.
The YMCAs across South-
western Ontario offer many
existing programs that help
support and welcome hun-
dreds of newcomers to Can-
ada each year. In particular,
in Sarnia-Lambton, the
YMCA Learning & Career
Centre has hosted funded
Immigrant/Newcomer Set-
tlement services for over 20
years. YMCA Immigrant Ser-
vices staff provides orienta-
tion and settlement support
to immigrants and their fam-
ilies and assists newcomers
with the everyday assistance
they need to successfully set-
tle in Canada. These pro-
grams are funded by Immi-
gration, Refugee and
Citizenship Canada and
Ministry of Citizenship,
Immigration and Trade.
Krista Gillespie, General
Manager of the YMCA
Learning & Career Centre
states, "The YMCA currently
plays a vital role in welcom-
ing and settling refugees
from many countries arriv-
ing in the Sarnia-Lambton
region. Our Learning &
Career Centre offers funded
English language courses,
referral services, job search
workshops, community con-
nections, and a variety of
counselling support. We are
ready to accept any Syrian
refugees into the program
and eager to welcome refu-
gees to all our YMCA
communities."
