selection process is to arrive at a single loca-
tion for a deep geological repository and a
Centre of Expertise with a willing and
informed host. Increasingly detailed field
studies and engagement, completed in col-
laboration with the community, will pro-
vide additional learning about the area's
potential for meeting strict safety require-
ments and for the project to align with the
community's long-term vision"
Phase 1 preliminary assessment is the
third of nine steps to evaluate potential suit-
ability of communities to host a deep geo-
logical repository. Phase 1 has been com-
pleted in 21 communities that have
requested them, including in Central
Huron. Of those, nine are still learning
about the plan for Canada. It will take sev-
eral more years to complete the necessary
studies to identify a preferred site for the
depository, including ensuring that the host
community is an informed and willing
host.
For communities who continue on
through the process after Phase 1, the next
phase involves more intensive community
learning and engagement. This is where the
local Learn More Centre can be a valuable
resource to the public.

available. During the open house NWMO
Relationship Manager Paul Austin stated,
"NWMO is really interested in sharing
information and answering questions at
the Learn More Centre." There are many
visual displays to explain the processes, as
well as printed materials that are available
to the public to take with them. Austin
pointed out that some of the brochures
have recently been updated to include
more illustrations and images to make the
process easier to understand than the for-
mer tomes of written documentation previ-
ously available. The updated brochures are
much more user friendly.
Central Huron, upon completion of
Phase 1, is being recognized at this point in
the process, along with other communities,
for its leadership in advancing Canada's
plan.
In the press release Shaver was quoted as
saying, "Each community that has reached
this stage of the process has helped ensure
that discussion and leaming continues, and
that important questions about safety are
asked. Central Huron has played an impor-
tant role in in advancing this major national
project on behalf of Canadians."
With Phase 1 completed, The NWMO
will provide $400,000 to the municipality
upon the establishment of a Community
Well -Being Reserve Fund. These funds are
to be administered by Central Huron to
support continuing efforts to build com-
munity sustainability and well-being. Pro-
jects, programs or services that benefit
community youth, seniors, community
sustainability, energy efficiency or eco-
nomic development are examples of activi-
ties this fund could be used to support.
Those in the Municipality of Central
Huron are invited to visit the NWMO Learn
More Centre, located at 38 Albert Street in
Clinton. You can also visit the website at
