Celebrating grandparents
for Breastfeeding Week
The Huron County Health Unit is
celebrating World Breastfeeding Week
from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7.
This year the health unit
especially recognizes grand-
parents, who can have a
major influence on new
families.
"Grandmothers and
grandfathers are important
sources of support for new
mothers and families," said
Public Health Nurse Ashley
Furtney. "They can influence
mothers' decisions to begin
breastfeeding. They can also
influence how long mothers
continue to breastfeed and
how supported mothers
feel."
Supportive grandparents
listen, encourage and praise
new families in their
breastfeeding journeys. They
also help new families by
doing household chores or
caring for older children.
The health unit asked new
mothers how parents and in-
laws have supported them.
Here is what they said:
":.. always came and did
my dishes."
"... never questioned my
decision to breastfeed my
son."
"... encouraged me on the
days that were challenging."
"... I felt alone, so my
mother-in-law visited with
me while I breastfed:'
"... my mom never breast-
fed herself but wanted me
to succeed, so she came
with me to the infant feed-
ing clinic."
"... gave me a hug when I
needed it:'
In honour of grandpar-
ents, the health unit is
running a contest. Moms
and dads are encouraged
to email breastfeeding@
huroncounty.ca with sto-
ries and photos of how
their parent(s) influenced
the early days of breast-
feeding and what they did
to help new parents and
their grandchild succeed.
Contest runs until Sep-
tember 28. The winner
will be announced during
Canadian Breastfeeding
Week (Oct. 1 to Oct. 7).

Plans urged to protect Ontario's Wetlands
Postmedia Network
Land development in
Ontario has become a huge
drain on the province's
wetlands.
In a discussion paper
released this week, the Min-
istry of Natural Resources
calls for the development of
a strategic plan for Ontario
wetlands.
"Wetlands continue to be
threatened by land conversion,
alterations to natural water lev-
els, invasive species, pollution
and climate change," the dis-
cussion paper says.
The plan would outline
steps to be taken over the
next 15 years to improve
wetland conservation,
including the possible adop-
tion of a "no net loss" policy
that would require any
destruction of wetlands to be
offset by rehabilitation of
lands elsewhere.
Wetland Conservation in
Ontario: A Discussion Paper
is posted online on the prov-
ince's Environmental
Registry. Ontarians have
until Oct. 30 to make
submissions.
Types of wetlands: Marsh,
swamp, and bog and fen
(peatlands).
Why wetlands matter:
Extremely productive and
biologically diverse habitats
that also improve water
quality and act as flood
control.
Swamped by develop-
ment: 70% of southern
Ontario's original wetlands
are gone.
Canada has one of the highest rates of
multiple sclerosis in the world.
