Alzheimer's coming to Huron
Alzheimer Society of
Huron County introduces
its first family targeted
event at the Walk for Alz-
heimer's on May 2.
The event will be part of
the leading nation-wide
awareness and fundrais-
ing campaigns for Alzhei-
mer Society's across Can-
ada. It's a new event,
evolving from the Walk for
Memories, but as more
people are affected by
dementia, the need for
support has escalated as
well.
For the first time ever
the demand for support in
Huron will instigate a wait
list at the Society in 2015.
Programs such as the Vol-
unteer Companion Pro-
gram, iPods for Memories,
and Just for Us - respite
services during Caregiver
Support Groups, are not
government funded so the
Society relies on the sup-
port of donors to continue
to offer such invaluable
services. By moving the
Walk to the springtime,
the Alzheimer Society is
hoping that families who
are separated by distance
can come together and
eliminate the worry of
winter weather being a
deterrent.
"We know that as Alz-
heimer's disease and
other dementias become
more prevalent in our
communities each year,
more people are affected,"
said Jeanette Sears, public
education co-ordinator. "A
new trend we're seeing is
children who are learning
at a very young age what
dementia looks like, and
they want to do something
about it."
The Walk for Alzhei-
mer's will provide a
chance for people of all
ages to rally together in
one location to show their
support for loved ones,
family and friends who are
navigating their journey
through dementia.
The Walk for Alzhei-
mer's will kick off at the
Betty Cardno Memorial
Centre, located at 317
Huron Road, with registra-
tion starting at 9 a.m. The
Walk will begin at 10 a.m.
"This really is an event
for every age. The full
course is five kilometers,
but for those with mobility
issues or young children,
there are options for lkm
or 3km distances so that
individual goals can be
set," said Brittany Williams,
events co-ordinator. "After
the Walk people can enjoy
musical entertainment, a
BBQ lunch serving Hay-
ter's Turkey Burgers and
fun activities for the kids."
Families who have been
faced with the challenges
of dementia will lead the
inaugural lap. If your fam-
ily would like to take part,
or if you know of someone
who should be honoured,

"It's all about commu-
nity and bringing people
together who are affected
by this hard reality. No
one's alone through this
journey and the Walk for
Alzheimer's is the perfect
venue to voice that out
loud," Williams said. "We
are appealing for the
whole community to come
together as we take our
next steps forward to
tackle dementia:'

The Londesborough
UCW held their annual
World Day of Prayer Ser-
vice the evening of their
regular meeting, March
16th. In addition to a
goodly number of regular
attendees at these meet-
ings, ladies from the
Auburn UCW were guests
that evening.
This 2015 service, which
was used by Christian
women around the world,
was prepared by ladies
from the Bahamas. The
Bahamas are a group of
700 islands, large and
small, in the Atlantic/
Caribbean.
The Londesborough ser-
vice was led by Lena Nes-
bitt, Rena Kolkman, Jane
Hoggart and Barb Bosman.
The meeting room was
decorated to give a feeling
of island life. The top of the
altar, which was draped in
blue, was covered with
island items - flowers,
shells, petals, straw arti-
cles. Props that featured in
the service were a pitcher,
bowl and towel. The
islands' national bird, the
flamingo, was also
featured.
The ladies enjoyed a short
video that gave an under-
standing of life on these
islands and of how Christi-
anity has developed there.
"Do you know what I
have done for you?" was
the theme of the service
based on John 13.
This scripture passage
recounts how Jesus
washed the feet of His
apostles. This was a very
shocking act in Biblical
times. But it was an exam-
ple of the 'radical love' it is
important for all Chris-
tians to show. Voices of 17
Bahamian islands were
heard leading in scriptures
and prayers and encourag-
ing the world to demon-
strate radical love.
The evening ended with
traditional Bahamian food,
johnny cake, coconut bars
and fresh fruit.
Last Tuesday, my morn-
ing started on a sweet note.
Our returning robin was
enjoying the warm sun-
shine and serenading me
quite enthusiastically. He
has returned every morn-
ing since to cheer me
except for that snowy one.
