According tb Bruce White,
the entension co-ordinator of
the program, Art Packs can
offer a "vial stinutlus" to
community halls, classrooms
and librarieS.
,In its second year of
operation, the program con-
sists of 250 different pack-
ages, all listed, in a concise
14 -page • catalogne, Mr.
White's job Is to present the
Art Pack concept to service
clubs, church groups, schobl
hoards_and_other_._ pith] i c
organizations for their use.
The program is not offered to
private citizens or firms and
Mr. White explained, "It
wouldn't be fair for the art to
sit in someone's office."
The program is a new
approach to art galleries and
is attempting to dispell the
myth that art has to be locked
away in a gallery.
The only program of its
kind in North America, Art
Packs were developed after
.the Gallery's director Peter
Bennett saw a similar pro-
gram being used in Wales.
Mr. White was hired as a
summer student to produce
the Art Packs for The Gal-
lery. This has developed into
a fulltime position and re-
cently Mr. White has been
showing the program to
various organizations and the
Aaii4r4 of edueation in Huron
County.
, The Huron -Perth Separate
'School board is also interest-
ed in using the program and -
f accepted. the packs or
units they have selecte'd,
would be sent to the interest-
ed teachers for use in their
classrooms.
Mr. White explained that
the units are resource kits
and can be used in many
ways for study or illustration.
A Canadian native heritage
kit allows students to closely
study Inuit soapstone art, to
handle it and see how it was
created.
Another pack studies color
and the students could, for
InstAnce, use their imagin-
ations 1:1-3e trying to sound:ea--
the colours that -appear in an
abstract art creation.
Early European and Cana-
dian history can be taken";
beyond textbook study with
the use of slide presentations
taken at pioneer villages and
examination of replicas of
early tools and artifacts. One
pack illustrates children's
books, some study sculpture,
architecture, fabrics, animals
and nature, other countries
and cultures.
Mr. White explained that
the packs are meant to be in
a wide variety of •ways. A
group, for example could
take prints form 'the Euro-
pean masters and create a
play about the scene painted
on the canvas.
Mr: White emphasized the
program's value by noting.
"We're producing a whole
'visually illiterate generatior0
• While each Art Pack costs
$50 to produce, the units,are
not untouchable. The Scull),
tures, Inuit carvings, African
dance masks and old artifacts
are all replicas anti the
artworks are all reproduct-
ions, covered with clear
acetate so they can be easily
used and' not abused.
"This is work that's pre-
pared to go out. We want it
to be handled," Mr. ,White
noted.A
5,000, Wintario grant
got the program underway in
1979 and now over $12,000
has been invested into the
packages. Despite some dif-
ficulties funding the free
program, the -At t Packs -I -are
becoming a popular means to
advertise The Gallery.
Along with the Art Packs,
The Gallery in Stratford
offers other interesting and
informative tours and talks
on the many facets of art.
Groups are invited to take
part in discussions on mo-
dern art, antiques and crafts
and view film travelogues on
world famous cities.
The Gallery, located on 54
Romeo Street in Stratford is
open daily and more inform-

It's more than 30 years since Elmer
and Norah Larone established our
family business. At first it was called
Seaforth 5c to $1 Store. Later the
name was changed to Larones.
In 1979 Ken and Nancy Larone
purchased the family business. Dur-
ing the past year we have been
making a series of renovations which
we hope our customers will enjoy.
The renovations have allowed us to
expand our selection of merchandise.
This Christmas we hope'you will take
time to browse and enjoy some
traditional Seaforth friendliness.
