Centenaires, Tavistock one for one
The Seafqrth Centenaires gof together
twice with . the Tavistock Braves this
weekend, travelling to Tavistock for a Fri-
day Tright match and hosting the Braves
again on Sunday. In both cases, home ice
advantage decided the game and the
teams were one for one, Tavistock winning
4-3 on Friday and Seaforth victorious 7-4
on Sunday.
Friday night paw Tavistock open the
scoring a minute and a half into the game.
Brian Taylor responded with a quick goal
a minute later, assisted by Ted ;Sills and
Paul Mcllwain. The Brave got another
one by, 'Seaforth goaltender Bill Tremeer at
the 13:29 mark, and the first period end-
ed 2-1 for Tavistock. ,
Ted Sills came in at 6:44 in the second
period, assisted by Taylor, for the
Centenaire's second goal. The game re-
mained tied until 1.4:43, when Tavistock
scoredagain and swung the score intheir
favour. An early, goal in the third period
put the Braves two up on Seaforth, and
despite a late goal by Taylor, with assists
from the Jason Beuttenmiller and Jason
McNichol, .the Centenaires were unable to
catch up.
Tavistock outshot Seaforth 48 to 23 in
this match -up, but Bill Tremeer gave a
great performance in net and stopped 45
tough Tavistock shots. This game could
have been a lot more one-sided than it
was.
The Centenaires were ready for
Tavistock -two days later, and welcomed
the Braves by .opening the scoring midway
through the first period. Paul Mcllwain
came in and centred the puck to Jason
McNichol, who drove the puck into the net
with a clean wrist shot. The Braves came
back with a two-man power play goal at
4:48, and it looked like it was going to be
another back and forth match. Seaforth
took the lead again with 1:03 remaining in
the period, when Jason Beuttemniller
skated upice with the puck and passed it
off to Andy Ball. Ball went deep before
centring off to Brad Beuttenmiller in the
slot, who snapped the puck past
Tavistock's Dana Duskoey in goal.
The Braves. tied the game up yet again
with a hard-fought goal at 13:21 in the se-
cond`period, but ,a power play in the dy-
ing seconds of the period gave Seaforth the
extra room :that they needed to set up
another point. Brad Beuttemniller won the
draw :against' 'Tavistock's Jonathan Hay

High school curlers advance
WI' BESOM AN' STANE
BY JEAN ROSS
Three Seaforth High School rinks, (one
boys' and two girls') competed in Goderich
in the High School Curling Competition.
The two girls' rinks came out on top and
returned home to play-off. Tina Bosman's
rink of Sherri McLaughlin, Bonnie
Finlayson and Pam Hoggart won over
Pam Bennett, Tracy Salverda, Sherri Ben-
net and Cathy Dalrymple to advance to the
Huron -Perth Competition in Stratford on
February 22.
Rick McDonald, Keith Seimon, Ed
Salverda and Laurie Fischer curled in the
Colt's competition at Markdale on the
weekend. They lost to Wiarton in an extra
end on Friday night; beat Owen Sound and
lost to a second Wiarton rink in the dou-
ble knockout event on Saturday.
The Ladies Leagues' second draw was
won by Marie McGavin and her rink of
Marjorie Papple, Sharon McClure and Lois
Hartley. Rumours have it, that Marie was
distracting the other skips -with some of
Neils' stories.
The Thursday night Mixed are having an
Novice clinch
Two victories and a tie this week prov-
ed to be enough for the Seaforth Novice as
they clinched top spot in league play. They
now enter W.O.A.A./O.M.H.A. playoffs
against Clinton in a best of five series.
Three games in three nights plus a prac-
tice saw this busy bunch of boys take their
show to Goderich, Clinton and Wingham on
successive nights.
In Goderich Scott Van Dooren kick
started the offense less than a minute in
when he took a Derek Nesbitt feed and it
was 1-0. Scott V returned our minutes
later to make it 240 with an unassisted ef-
fort That was it until late, in the second
period when Goderich struck to cut the
deficit to one. But like in real life, as
Michael Wilson would know, the deficit is
hard to control as was Seaforth's offense.
Late in the Second Scott V. let his two
linenaates grab the limelight as Derek
Nesbitt worked his way , out of the corner
and found ;ttyan 'Van Dooren eairiped In

day night. The ladies are bringing food for

There will be curling too.
The "High Seas of Seaforth" Mixed
Bonspiel was held on Saturday. Skull and
Cross Bones were the motif of the day
with a mural and pictures drawn by
Joanne McDonald depicting the pirate
theme. Many curlers were costumed like
the "Motley Crew". Capt. Hook McNichol's
long sword ' discouraged anyone from
raiding the treasure chest full of gold.
John Skeoch's London rink won the 9
o'clock draw and Les Rose's London rink
won the second draw. The bonspiel was
sponsored by Fleming's, All Styles II, and
Topnotch.
Ron Pryce's rink of Marshy, Peter, Elsie
Willems and his spare curler Lori Willems
were judged the best costumes in the first
draw, with Gary and Mary Ann McNichol,
Mike Musselman and Joan Beuerman get-
ting the prize for their outfits in the second
draw. Another successful bonspiel with the

Early in the third the two small fries
were back at work but let Scott V help as
Nesbitt scored from close in starting
Seaforth on a goal -a -minute spread that
ended with 2:29 remaining and the count
at 10-1.

Adam Leonhardt and Jason Hulley draw-

The give-and-take scoring continued ear-
ly into the third period, :with Tavistock
roaring in at 30 seconds after the face-off
with another tying goal.' The Centenaires
decided that they'd .had enough of this
nonsense, and buried the Braves with a
three -goal lead. Jason Beuttenmiller and
Brad Schroeder teamed up to feed the
puck to Brian Taylor on a power play.
Taylor wound up and unloaded a slapshot
off of the right wing for a good-looking
goal, and Seaforth took the lead once
more. Two minutes later, Brad and Jason
Beuttenmiller passed off to Brad Carter,
wito banged in a rebound close to the net
for goal number five. Carter picked up his
second" goal of the game at 4:33 on a
power -play, sneaking past Tavistock's
defende and slipping the puck into the net
before Duskocy could do anything about it.
Carter was assisted on this goal by
goaltender Bill Tremeer and Andy Ball.
The Braves made a last-ditch effort in
the final minute of the game and scored a
two-man goal, but Tim Moore .thumbed his
nose at Tavistock with a perfectly centred
shot into the Braves' empty net from the
Seaforth blue line, with 24 seconds left in
the game. The°contest ended 7-4 for the
Centenaires.
Bilil Tremeer had a great afternoon in
the net, coming up with a lot of big saves
and stopping 38 shots on goal. Seaforth got
their act together and banged in a total of
47 shots on goal, a far cry from Fri . , y
night's 23.
The Centenaires will be travelling to Ex-
eter on Friday night, and again to
Wellesley on Saturday night, for the last
o es :Abe regular season. The
