season getting shorter for Centenaires
Seaforth Centenaires suffered a tough
loss at the hands of the Mitchell Hawks on
December 23, but they bounced back last
Friday night to' avenge the defeat by
soundly trouncing Tavistock. They must
have gotten what they wanted for
Christmas.
In the contest against Mitchell, the
Centenaires had their minds on the
holidays and were subsequently romped
over 5-1. Seaforth's lone goal came late in
the third period, scored by Paul Mcllwain
with assists by Darren Akey and Jason
McNichol. By this point, Seaforth was
already down 4-1, and the Hawks scored
their final goal with one and a half
minutes left on the clock just to play it
safe.
One embarrassment of the game was a
two -minute slashing penalty called on
Centenaires' goaltender Bill Tremeer ear-
ly in the first period, at the time of Mit-
chell's first goal.
The Centenaires' enjoyed a six-day holi-
day, and came back fighting. They hosted
the Tavistock on Friday, December 29 and
played a strong game of hockey, downing
the Braves 6.1.
There was a lot of skating and not . mucli
scoring for the entire first period until the,
final 30 seconds, when Andy Ball took a
pass from Blair Beuerman and put
Seaforth on the scoreboard.
This fired up the Centenaires, and the
team took off. Brad Beuttenmiller scored
the first of his two goals of the game at
11:30 in the second.iperiod, a power -play ef-
fort assisted by Mike Murray. Less than a
minute later Bede I was back in the

The Braves' goalie, Jeff Redfern could
only watch .yin dismay as Rich Boddy,
assisted by Ball and Beuerman, scored for
the Centenaires and put Seaforth at a 4-0
advantage.
Enough is enough, decided at least one
Tavistock player,.; and ten seconds after
Boddy's goal Rob; Oliver scored a single-
handed goal for the Braves. That was the
last time that the visitors were heard from
in the second period, and with 4:24 left
rad Beuttenrnhller scored another goal on
assists by Ball and Murray.
Tavistock pulled themselves together in
the third period and scored two goals,
making the score 5-3. Mike Murray widen-
ed the gap for Seaforth with an empty net
goal near the end of the game, assisted by
Beuttenmiller.
"Mike Murray had a great game," noted
Centenaires' coach Graham Nesbitt; also
lauding the superb playing by Brad Beut-
tenmiller and Andy Ball.
The efforts of the entire team paid off in
this game, and a final desperate goal by
Tavistock with 1:27 left in the game wasn't
enough to make up the deficit. The
Centenaires deserved, and got, the win.
Coach Nesbitt also made note of the fine
goaltending by Jason Cooper, who saved 35
of Tavistock's 39 shots on goal. Seaforth
had 45 shots on goal.
Bill Tremeer did not dress for Friday's
game, as he was admitted to hospital
shortly after Christmas. He was discharg-
ed a few days afterwards, but he's taking
it easy for the time being and is taking in
the games from the warmer section of the
stands. Coach Nesbitt remarked that he
may dress for the Centenaires home game
against Lucan on the 7th. Speedy recovery,
Bill!
This is judgment time for the
Centenaires, with only nine games remain-
ing in the regular season and a three-day
tournament in Exeter on January 19,20 and
21. The team travels to Exeter on Friday,
but will be back at the Seaforth 'Iistrict
Arena on Sunday at 1:30 to battle Lucan.
Let's cheer them on, the season is shorter
than you think.
EFFECTIVE DEFENCE - Blair Beuerman does his best to stave off a Tavistock
rival during Friday night's home game. The Centenaires defeated the Braves 6-4.
