The Huron Expositor, 1990-01-03, Page 3THE HURON :icXPO$ITOJ JANUARY 3 19! Traditionally, the Christmas holldays'are Smelling that kids start looking forward to from 'the first day of school in September. But all too often, the cries of "School's out!" turn to moans of "There's nothing to do.." by the time that the se- cond week of the break rolls around. For young aad old alike in Seaforth, that problem didn't seem to .existover the holidays this year. The snow that has been tium -on--the--region- in the past-few-- weeks astfew-- weeks has been keeping everybody busy: If folks weren't busy shovelling it or sliding- down_ mountains of it, . theywere. freezing it into ice and skating on it. Sunday's rain put a bit of a damper on outdoor activities, but the return of the white stuff and the rise in temperatures on Monday brought folks back to the great outdoors. The Expositor caught some Seaforth natives on film, enjoying themselves...or otherwise! GETTING THERE is ho problem.... BUT STAYING THERE is another story, especially when you combine slippery snow and even more slippery snowsuits. Greg Scott and Alice Dick challenged the hill beside Lyon's supermarket, and won, but only after a few false starts. Photos by Paula Elliott IN THE NET or on the bench? Steve Greidanus, the goalie, was in two places at once on Saturday afternoon. To top it off, he had his hands full trying to stop shots from his brother, Tony, who makes another move for the ball. I'D RATHER BE...doing just about anything, the expression on Frank Vincent's face seems to say. He was busy this weekend, shovelling, the snow off of his daven- port roof on Side Street. Chances are good that he'll be up there a few more times this winter. ROOM TO ROAM - Anna Maillox, left, and her friend Melissa Finlayson found the ice rink outside the arena much less crowded than the one inside. The fresh air was probably a good excuse for some hot chocolate, afterwards. AIRBORNE - Anna Mailloux perfected her leaps and spins on the outdoor ice rink beside the arena this Saturday. Most of us try to start off each new year with some grand resolutions, great plans and some sort of an idea of what the next 365 days will yield. And more often than not, the resolutions dissolve into thin air within a week or two, the best -laid plans go awry and we realize that we have no idea what the next 12 minutes, much less 12 months, holds in store for us. Oh, well. Now we have a whole new DECADE to worry about, along with it! We asked some of the local dignitaries to gaze into their crystal balls see what's hi store for Seaforth, Tuckersmith and McKillop for the next year. There are some projects on the go, but it's basically anybody's ball game. Mayor Hazel Hildebrand cites the Huron County Landfill project as on of the going concerns for 1990, and would like to see the old one closed and the new one opened as soon as possible. "I would hope that the Provincial government can come through with our grant for the sewer expansion," Seaforth's mayor adds. "If we can get the sewer expansion go- ing, then we can get the work done on streets in the south end of town that bad- ly need doing." And Streetscape? "We're working on that, little by little, every year," she notes. If 1989 was the year of the Rise and Fall ut L.D. Wilson, it should be interesting to see what develops in 1990. Overall, Mayor Hildebrand is hoping for a year of continuing prosperity for the Town of Seaforth. Any personal resolutions, Mayor? "No," she laughs, "I don't make any of those." George Cantelon, Reeve of Tuckersmith, has roads on his mind for 1990. "We'd like to continue on road construc- tion. whatever we can afford," he says. "We'd like to build a bridge, if we can get enough money from the government," he adds, referring to the Broadfoot's Bridge in the township. Another big project on the go over the next year will be the in- itial work on the Vanastra Community Im- provement project, slated to extend until 1993. Marie Hicknell doesn't foresee any ma- jor upheavals occurring in McKillop Township in 1990, but the Reeve isn't rul- ing out surprise developments, either. "Something may come up in the next year," she remarks. "We're having a meeting Tuesday afternoon...something may even come up then!" She concurs with Reeve Cantelon, however, that "..roads are the biggest con- cern right now." If the predictions for the coming year are an accurate indicator, 1990 should see some of the finest -looking county roads in the province unveiled.
