The community was sad-
dened to hear of the passing
of Mary McIntosh on
Tuesday, September 15,
2015. She has played such an
active role in the town of
Lucknow for many years and
she will be missed.
Mary Anna McIntosh
(nee Maclntyre) was born in
Kinloss Township on August
9, 1934 to Norma (Nichol-
son) and Archibald MacIn-
tyre. She enjoyed growing up
on the farm on Concession
Two with her three older
brothers, Alex, Allan and
Donald who have all prede-
ceased her. During her years

"Rapid City" and later at the
Lucknow High School, Mary
formed many lasting friend-
ships. After graduating from
nursing training at St.
Joseph's Hospital in London
in 1956, Mary worked in Sar-
nia, Saskatoon, Kincardine,
and Montreal. She worked
in Lucknow for Dr. Mel Cor-
rin and Dr. Jack McKim until
1983. Many people will
remember receiving a sucker
(and often a kiss or a hug)
from her at that office. This
"lady with the suckers" con-
tinued to carry suckers in her
purse for many years!
Mary later worked as the
Director of Care at Pinecrest
Manor until she retired in

1994. Although Mary was
busy, she found the time to
do quite a lot of travelling all
over the world. Mary was
also very devoted to her fam-
ily and she enjoyed every
opportunity to spend time
with them.
During her retirement,
Mary became an active vol-
unteer in the community.
Volunteerism gave Mary a
great sense of satisfaction
and a feeling that she was
making a positive contribu-
tion to society. She drove cli-
ents to the Wingham Day
Away Centre a couple of days
a week. She served on the
Board for the Centre and
sold many "Spring Fling"
tickets each year to support
its work. She also volun-
teered at retirement homes
What makes a Good Dog?
Goderich Coop
Gallery
Judy Barker
Goderich Coop Gallery's
Guest Artist for October
poses a question which
every dog lover has probably
considered at one time...
what makes a "Good Dog"?
Nadia Rochon began her
artistic journey in High
School, under the tutelage of
two dedicated teachers; she
moved on to study for two
tears at the Art Gallery of
Ontario Art Program, fol-
lowed by art studies in Uni-
versity. Ms. Rochon, with
talent and skill in many
media, has chosen graphite
on paper for her current
show, "good.dog'.
Rochon's chosen subject
is her own dog whose beau-
tifully textured coat is readily
captured by her skilled use
of pencil. Does that answer
part of our question? Maybe
a good dog is one whose
physical characteristics can
be depicted artistically?
But, you say, there is
more...much more to a "good
dog': Is it then one who sim-
ply makes a good companion
for its person? One who
fetches newspaper and slip-
pers? Is a good dog one who
obeys its owners every wish
and command? In Rochon's
case, the answer is an
emphatic "No" to all of these.
She has asked the dog
(whose face we never actu-
ally see) to "perform" a num-
ber of tasks common to
human -dog interaction; sim-
ple things such as "sit",
"come'; "stay'; "fetch'; "down;
all of these, so called "nor-
mal" companion dog behav-
iours. But, as the viewer soon
realizes, actions never actu-
ally performed by this dog,
who, with seemingly single-
minded purpose, simply
ignores every command.
And so, we ask, is this dog
a "good dog"? Only its
human could answer that
question, and, if these lov-
ingly rendered drawings are
any indication, one for
which we will never have the
answer from Ms. Rochon.
Please join us for a Wel-
come Reception for guest art-
ist Nadia Rochon, Thursday
October 1, from 1 p.m. to 3
p.m. Meet the artist, enjoy
some refreshments, and the
art, at the Goderich Coop
Gallery, lower level, 54 Court-
house Square. Hours are
Monday through Saturday
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
where you will always be wel-
comed by a member artist.
A sweet treat for the Wingham & District Hospital Foundation
Submitted by Wingham &
District Hospital Foundation
Maraya Schiestel is a little
girl with a big heart. Inspired
by her grandfather, she held
a summer bake sale and
donated the proceeds to the
Wingham & District Hospital
Foundation.
Maraya Schiestel is the
eight year old granddaugh-
ter of Sharon and George
Skinn. When her grandfa-
ther ended up staying as
an in-patient in the Wing -
ham & District Hospital for
an extended period she
decided she wanted to do
something for the Hospital
that was helping her
grandfather. She planned
the bake sale with her
grandmother and together
they did all the baking.
Maraya said her favourite
thing to bake was blue-
berry muffins.
In late July, during the
Wingham BIA sidewalk
sales, she held her bake sale
on Main Street in front of
Finishing Touches, which is
owned by her mother Mar-
garet Schiestel. Maraya's
bake sale raised $121 which
she donated to the Wingham
& District Hospital Founda-
tion. The funds will go
towards new equipment for
the Hospital.
The WDH Foundation is
very grateful to be on the
receiving end of Maraya's
generosity and is excited to
have such an enthusiastic
new donor. A big thank you
goes out to Maraya and her
whole family for supporting
the Hospital. Way to go!

and visited with residents
regularly. She was involved
with the Lions' Ladies organ-
ization for many years and
she was a big supporter of
the Lucknow Agricultural
Society.
Mary took pride in her
home and spent many hours
caring for her yard and her
gardens. She also took great
pride in the town of
Lucknow and supported
every event that she could.
She loved children and she
attended many local hockey
games and often baked
cookies to share with the
players at the games. She
was a great supporter of the
"shop local" movement. She
believed that, if you couldn't
find it in Lucknow, you prob-
ably didn't need it!
Mary McIntosh was a
person who had plenty of
energy and she went "full
steam ahead" most days.
Unfortunately, a recent
battle with cancer slowed
her down. She faced her
illness with strength and
she treasured the time
spent with her family and
friends and thoroughly
enjoyed the many visits
she had with people from
the community during the
last few months. She loved
the town of Lucknow and
the people in it. She will be
missed.
