The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-09-16, Page 5Wednesday, September 16, 2015 • Lucknow Sentinel 5 www.lucknowsentinel.com letters to the editor Lucknow Little Mudder To the editor: I had the opportunity to per- sonallyview the Lucknow Little Mudder course, at the soccer fields, on September 12. While I had always heard good things about this new fundraiser for the Agricultural Society, one can truly not appreciate the time and effort that goes into designing and building this course, and then dismantling it. I was absolutely amazed and so proud of the young directors, their spouses, friends and volunteers who form the Mudder Committee. This year's event included a mini mudder for children aged 6 to 14. As I watched them take off from the start line and make their way Community of Lucknow Dear Editor: This maybe a bit overdue but still needs to be said. Once again we have been reminded of what a wonderful commu- nitywe live in. The month of August was a good indicator. No matter what Environ- ment Canada calls the storm that roared through Lucknow on August 2, the high winds devastated the area. Roofs and barns damaged, trees broken and uprooted, lawn furniture and children's playsets destroyed or missing, hydro out. Everything had its toll. What impressed us first was the speed with which people showed up to check on neighbours and to help those who needed tarps put up on roofs. The Fire Depart- ment volunteers patrolled the town to check and ensure everyone was safe. Secondlywere the sheer numbers of volunteers. We Terry Fox Run this weekend Dear Editor: This year has been a busy one at the Chamney house and prepping for the Terry Fox run was not at the top of our list. In fact, I considered that maybe it's time to drop it. And then I remembered. I remembered why we did this. I remembered why we started it. It was actually Steve that started this, on his own as a tribute to my Dad, Al Hamil- ton who lost a seven year battle. Since then we ourselves, have seen way too many losses to this terrible disease; grandfathers, uncles, cousins, bosses, cow- orkers, and friends. We have also shared the fear with friends and familywho have had a diagnosis of cancer. But we are noticing more and more that we are hear- ing stories that it can be beaten! For 35 years, the Terry Fox rim has been raising funds to find a cure for cancer. "I don't feel that this is Lucknow UCW Nancy Walden Lucknow UCW Afternoon Group met on a hot September 8 afternoon at River ValleyApts. Deanna Reavie welcomed 10 members to a program on mis- sion. After a poem about Sep- tember, Sherrin Hanson read scripture about the parable of the good Samaritan. Deana read about "Opera- tion Sharing; a community program begun 30 years ago in Woodstock ON, by a couple who wanted to volunteer after a experiencing their own time of need. Under five local United Churches, 14 pro- grams are now delivered by over 200 volunteers. The focus is on compassion and the individual. "Ways to Over- come Poverty" is one pro- gram, also delivered at Huron College at Western University. Sherrin read the humour- ous "The Age of Mistake at 50': As the massive migrant refugee wave of over four million increases to Europe from the Syrian civil war and northern Africa, Deanna read a compelling letter from the September 7 New York Times. Written by Michael Ignatieff, former Liberal Party leader of Canada, now at Harvard University, he reminds the world that this is not just a European Union around the course, I was truly impressed. These are kids who are not continuous couch potatoes. They had a blast running, climbing, crawling through mud and sliding down water soaked hills. The opportunity was there to challenge another person, however, I think the biggest challenge was to had several large trees come down and family, neighbours and friends just showed up with chain saws and able bod- ies. Town and township staff came along to help clean up debris and brush. The local insurance broker and the insurance adjuster came out early on the holiday Monday to survey the damage and see that claims got started quickly. One story that was told to us by someone who is not unfair. That's the thing about cancer. I'm not the only one, it happens all the time to people. I'm not special. This just intensifies what I did. It gives it more meaning. It'll inspire more people. I just wish people would realize that anything's possible if you try; dreams are made possible if you try." Terry Fox This September 20 will be Lucknow's 12th run. Let's continue this dream to end cancer. It is a family event, welcoming bicycles, and problem. Many countries, including Canada, should be taking in more than 25,000 people each. Smarter and more generous solutions are needed. Lots of comment ensued among us. Sherrin read a lighthearted story about rationing during WWII. From another Chicken Soup for the Soul book, Deanna read a "good Samaritan" story about a stranger helping a lady on a rainy night who turned out to be Mrs. Nat King Cole. Karen Latour opened business reading a few, short 'baby bloopers' . Least Coin newsletter by a lady in themselves. It didn't matter if you finished first or last; they each took up the challenge! The adults followed the kids and several teams, or groups of friends, could be spotted covering the course together and cheering each other on. What a team building strategy! I had a originally from the commu- nity was that people came asking what help was needed and before he could respond, they were climbing up and tarping his roof. His com- ment was, "I love Lucknow!" More evidence in August of how great a community we live in was demonstrated August 28 and 29 and the weeks before and after. Music in the Fields was another huge success. Kudos must be roller blades as well as walk- ers and runners. (Children on bikes must wear helmets). Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. with the run starting at 11:00 a.m. from the Lucknow Arena. Roll Call was " a highlight of your summer", with news of various family achieve- ments, celebrations, travel, new great grandchildren, and relaxing time. August birthdays were Elaine Err- ington and Shirley Brooks, September birthdays are Ruth Pritchard and Sherrin. We closed with the UCW Prayer and continued fellow- ship with light lunch pre- pared by Karen and Ruth. great view of the mud sliding challenge and laughed with delight as several partici- pants took a run at it and slid on their bellies from one end to the other. Safety for everyone was evident with people at each obstacle, first aiders and fire fighters on hand throughout the event. given to the Lucknow Kins- men and all their hundreds of volunteers and hours to pull hundreds of volunteers and hours to pull it off.
