The Lucknow Sentinel, 2015-09-16, Page 3Bruce Food Gardens looking for support at Harvest Dinner after 'brutal' year Troy Patterson Kincardine News The Bruce Botanical Food Gar- dens hopes to grow in supporters for a second year at its Garden Har- vest Dinner on September 17, 2015. The inaugural event packed the Ripley Huron Community Centre in 2014, and this year's Foodland Ontario -sponsored event is offer- ing more, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. "We're hoping to use the funding raised from the dinner to help us fund some part-time help," said Taylor, adding the position is needed so they can focus more time on designing programming and expanding com- munity and corporate partnerships. Grassroots Wood Fired Pizza will be offered, along with chef -prepared meals using a variety of local ingredi- ents. Tastings will be provided by Hoity Toity Wine and Maclean's Ales, beef barbecue by the Ripley Lions, a celebrity pie auction and silent auc- tion as well, with DJ Ryan Berry pro- viding musical entertainment. Taylor said 2015 has been a "bru- tal" year for the BBFG. "Weather has played havoc with us tremendously," she said, adding extreme wet-to-dry, and hot condi- tions impacted plants and crops. The high winds and hail that caused damage across the region on August 2 also "pitted" tomatoes, dam- aged soft leafy vegetables, uprooted an apple tree, twisted the stalks of things like squash, and knocked over various planter features at the Ripley - area garden. Though some plants recovered, the damage was a setback for the pick -your -own community garden. "It has not been our premier year;' Taylor said. Looking forward, the BBFG is looking for committed volunteers and is hoping to see people take over maintenance, cleaning and care of certain areas of the garden next year, to help spread out the worldoad. "We want to adopt out specific sections so people can look after their spots, clean and harvest them," she said. "If we have enough people doing that, the garden will always look its prime." Taylor said they're also empha- sizing a "hands-on, pick -it -please" policy the facility has, which allows people to take their own fresh veg- etables and leave donations. "It's a really hard concept for people to get a grip on," she said. "People are reluctant to touch any- thing and we need to change that." Word that people can pick their own vegetables is hoped to spread, so visitors may also want to donate their time to care for the facility and help it grow and flourish over time. There has been a "tremendous response" to the 'Explore the Bruce' Adventure Passport this year, draw- ing "bus loads" of visitors to tour the gardens. Volunteers will also be needed in the coming weeks to clean up the garden by October 1, so it can be prepared to sit over the winter. Tickets for the dinner are $25 each and available at the Huron - Kinloss Twp. office in advance, as well as Kinloss Produce and Sleep- ers Bed Gallery in Kincardine.
