Library Launches Free Literacy Kit for Babies
Bruce County
Public Library
Submitted
Bruce County Public
Library has launched a
new literacy kit for babies
called "Me, You and a Book
Too!" The program pro-
vides every baby born after
January 1, 2015 who lives
in Bruce County with an
early literacy kit. The kit
contains items designed to
help parents and caregiv-
ers encourage early
literacy habits with their
infants by providing easy
to use materials and exam-
ples of how literacy can
begin at an early age.
The kits include a reusa-
ble book bag, board book
(Kiss, Tickle, Cuddle,
Hug by Susan Musgrave), a
free library card, a copy of
the Ready to Read booklet
for parents and caregivers,
a growth chart, posters and
stroller cards with literacy
tips and ideas to encour-
age play with language
during baby's daily
routines.
Developing good liter-
acy habits from birth cre-
ates a foundation for later
success. Reading and
playing with language
builds strong emotional
connection between
babies and their caregiv-
ers, helps babies eventu-
ally achieve academic
success, learn to commu-
nicate, builds logical
thinking skills and helps
babies make sense of their
world. Providing the kits
emphasizes the library's
goal of reaching out into
our communities to assist
in lifelong learning and
provide support to under-
served populations in
Bruce County.
Funding for the program
was received from Commu-
nity Foundation Grey Bruce
(Eva Leflar Foundation),
Sarah Badgley Foundation
for Rural Literacy and pro-
ceeds from BCPL's annual
book sale. With these gener-
ous sponsors, the Library
was able to purchase the
required 700 kits for 2015. In
order to continue the pro-
gram into 2016, Bruce
County Public Library will
seek further funding part-
nerships from groups, com-
munity organizations, busi-
nesses, and corporate
sponsors. If your organiza-
tion or business would like
to make a donation to Me,
You and a Book Too! please
contact Bruce County Pub-
lic Library through our web-
site: library.brucecounty.
on.ca or at Bruce County

1300 Perth Huron Babies Per Year to Receive Gift
KidsFirst Huron Perth partners with
Foundation for Education Perth Huron
Labour Day Weekend will
officially usher in the birth of
an exciting new initiative for
the newest among us.
Thanks to KidsFirst Huron
Perth and the Foundation
for Education Perth Huron,
parents of every newborn
from Perth and Huron coun-
ties will now receive a 'Read
to Baby' Bundle - a special
gift given soon after delivery
that is designed to engage lit-
tle minds, bring support and
tools to parents and help
nurture the bond between
baby, mommy and daddy.
Presented to parents by
nurses and midwives, the
'Read to Baby' Bundle con-
sists of a sturdy and colour-
ful baby book, a specially
designed booklet of rhymes,
songs and developmental
milestones and a complete
list of service and support
agencies - all housed in a
reusable cloth bag sporting
tips for reading to baby.
According to the Huron
and Perth Health Units,
approximately 1300 babies
are born in Huron and Perth
counties each year. Statisti-
cally, 325 of these babies are
considered to be at risk of
developing learning, emo-
tional, behavioural or
physical disabilities in the
future. These inherent risks
are compounded by the
challenges families face in
our current economic times.
"Research shows that
learning begins at birth and
good literacy skills, built
from the beginning, provide
children with the best
chance to rise above their
particular challenges to live
happy and productive lives.';
states Donna Feeney of
Perth Care for Kids and
chairperson for the KidsFirst
Early Learning Network.
The cost of one bundle is
approximately $6 and the
bundles are distributed to
families at no cost to them.
The 'Read to Baby' Bundle
project is funded solely by
way of community support.
Support for this program
can be given online at www.
bit.ly/FOUNDing or by
cheque. Cheques can be
made payable to the: Foun-
dation for Education Perth
Huron and sent to 62 Chalk
St. N., Seaforth, ON NOK
